Recommendations for Durham

I know this isn't an AIBU but needed to post somewhere with a lot of traffic.

So, DH and I are going to Durham for the night in June. Really looking forward to it as we don't get many nights away without children.

It's quite local to us but it's not somewhere either of us have spent much time at.

Where is good to eat? We're staying on Old Elvet so ideally want somewhere within walking distance. We're not picky eaters but want somewhere for a nice date night so not just burgers and things which there seems to be a few of.

I appreciate any suggestions!

Flat White for coffee/breakfast/cake is lovely 🙂

La Spaghettata is a good Italian restaurant- it isn’t fancy but the food is delicious.

Arkarsu Turkish restaurant and grill is delicious! And serious portions too.

Thank you will add them to the list!
Flat white sounds lovely for the morning we come home and we love an Italian.
What would you recommend from Arkarsu? We've never been to a Turkish restaurant before so would be lovely to try something new

The Turkish place is great.. Go for grilled lamb, aubergine dips, flat bread. Similar is Lebaneat on the Bailey. Spaghettata is amazing.. V cheap, huge bowls of pasta but you can't book so be prepared to queue up (unless they've changed it recently). Flat White is nice but v expensive and there's always a queue. I like Bills which is literally next door or Chapters on Elvet Bridge. Vennels next to Waterstones does spectacular cakes.

Dh and I really like The Court Inn, last time we had a might away there. Proper pub, lovely food, excellent gin selection. It was about 3 years ago though so I cant vouch for anything that's changed since then!

Spags is a cheap and cheerful Italian restaurant - it's nothing special per se, but the food is tasty and it is a Durham institution, so worth visiting.

If you go to Durham, you must have cake - I'd also concur with @HugeAckmansWife's recommendation of Vennels and Chapters (in that order). When cake runs out, it runs out, so don't leave it too late in the day.

It is worth highlighting that these are also student haunts. When in June are you going? If possible, try for the last week, so the town will be quieter: www.dur.ac.uk/dates/

With that said, I'm not sure if Durham is normal levels of student busy at the moment - I haven't been there during Covid.

Lebeneat
Zen
Flat White Kitchen
Cosy Club
Riverview Kitchen

Students are here but not perhaps in their usual numbers. There's also a cat cafe if you want a kitten to share your cake with!!

Barrio Comida if you fancy a taqueria is lush - really good Mexican cocktails too
