AIBU?

To actually be raging at my mum chewing down the phone?

I'll admit I am a bit rough today but I was on the phone with my mum and as we were speaking she started eating and I mean she wasn't nibbling, she was taking full mouthfuls and chewing whilst speaking at the same time, I could hear her heavy breathing while chewing. It actually disgusted me and sent a rage through my body that I've not experienced in a long time. I'm a very calm, laid back person but I'm not exaggerating when I say I was enraged. I had to end the call very abruptly in order to not lose my temper and say something to her.

Also, isn't it just bad manners to eat on the phone? It's one thing taking a small bite but full mouthfuls when speaking? It's just so disgusting.

That is so disgusting. I'd be as annoyed as you are.

I have misophonia so any chewing noises give me the rage but I think even normal people would be irritated.

That's disgusting and noises like that have always made me feel absolute rage. I've had to (politely) leave tables in the past because of it or walk away from my desk at work.

I give it five posts before someone pops on to diagnose you with misophonia Grin

Also - people blowing their noses. It's so vile, it makes me feel sick.

I realise I have ishoos though

It's an absolutely hideous sound, I completely understand. It is bad manners to eat noisily in any setting, let alone down the blower.

Of course, there is tolerance for those who are unable to control their eating noises but those who are unwilling or thoughtless deserve a special place in hell.

@JackANackAnoreeee sorry, x-post... but yes, I think most people would find it very annoying.

It sounds like misophonia. I find mine is much worse when it is with someone on the phone, because of having to concentrate on the sound without being able to distract myself.

But yes, even if you didn’t have misophonia it would still be very bad manners of her to eat while on the phone.

Oh and YANBU.
Anyone remember that weight watchers radio ad a few years ago with the woman eating crisps as she spoke? I used to scream at the car radio when it came on

Ughhh I hate that! I have a friend who sends me voice notes while she is eating & it really pisses me off 😂. Also had a colleague eating an apple on a teams call last week, it took all my might not to say something. Disgusting

Yes, it's disgusting. The sound is magnified by the phone, which the culprit seems not to recognise or accept

I've ended calls with my mum due to her doing this, and told her to call back when she's finished eating.

Why does it have to be given a label (misophonia)?

I've had this happen to me and it's horrible.

Loud chewing is an extremely unpleasant noise and if someone is chewing down the phone the person on the other end is going to get the full force of it.

It's rude, like sitting next to someone and chewing directly beside their ear.

DH has done it on a few occasions. I just hang up immediately. Same if he phones me and starts talking to one of his friends at work who has wondered into the area.

It's a good job you can't get your hands down a phone line or I would throttle the git. That's only how it makes me feel in the moment though, I don't wait for him by the front door to do it when he comes home or anything.

Ignorant bastard and he knows it because he'll always phone back and say, "yeah, sorry that was rude and ignorant".

If you know it sucks, don't bloody do it. Wait five sodding minutes before calling.

Oh I'm glad I'm not alone in my reaction. Usually if I'm face to face with someone chewing doesnt bug me unless the room is silent and they are chewing or breathing really loudly...but down the phone uggggh
