AIBU?

To ask if period poops are common?

ImaHogg · 09/05/2021 10:40

I probably am bu to ask such a thing and I am most definitely not a poop troll!
I do have health anxiety so worry more than I should do.
Most of my friends are on the pill or mini pill so don’t have regular periods and say they don’t get period poops, so can’t ask anyone in rl.
I also suffer from IBS so am probably prone to this but during the first few days of my period (and I have horribly heavy periods due to polyps) it seems to mess up my digestive system. I am usually a regular, once a day person but during my period I feel a lot of activity in my stomach and lower bowel and can end up going a few times a day on day 1-3 and still never feel ‘empty’.
I have read about period poops but wonder just how common it really is?
Oh please put my anxious mind at rest, are there any other fellow period poopers out there 🤞

@Cial

Why would your friends not have regular periods if on the pill? Hmm

because lots of pills stop your period completely? Hmm
SprayedWithDettol · 09/05/2021 11:24

You have what is known in MN as Javelin Arse. It’s v common and bloody 😉 horrible.

OhWhyNot · 09/05/2021 11:25

Yes

There was a very interesting thread on here a few years back about symptoms girls and women have leading up to, during their period and after

It’s so wide ranging but comforting to know you are not the only one

In recent years my mood really drops the last day or day after my period finishes. I feel very emotional. Almost like my body is saying once again not pregnant. I’m per menopausal too (milk symptoms)

I’ve just tried to look for it unfortunately can’t find it

Jarstastic · 09/05/2021 11:36

Yes this is common. It’s because of release of Prostaglandins.

waitingforsun · 09/05/2021 11:42

Yes, it's normal. My gynaecologist told me the nerves/pain signals in the gut are linked with those in the reproductive organs. He advised me to eat Milled Flaxseed daily. Which I am terrible at remembering to do!

Cushionsnotpillows · 09/05/2021 11:54

Yep looser poos were always a sign that my period was on its way, would usually start next day. I have the coil now, no periods, it's bliss!

MooseBreath · 09/05/2021 11:56

I get it big-time. Constantly running to the toilet a few days each month.

PurBal · 09/05/2021 12:04

Normal. I actually get D&V some months, also normal.

AliceMcK · 09/05/2021 12:11

Yes definitely

lap90 · 09/05/2021 12:27

@Lockheart

Google would tell you that it's fairly normal.

Right! I remember googling this as a teen lol.
starfishmummy · 09/05/2021 12:39

Apill period isn’t a normal menstrual period.

But still affected my bowels.

Yep. Constipation for a couple of days in the run up to it, then havoc for the first couple of days. I also find that after a big poop, I get a flood of menstruation, almost as if it’s been blocked by the poop (really sorry for the far TMI), but wondered if that also happens to anyone...?

OhWhyNot · 09/05/2021 13:35

Yes I get that AFS1

And sometimes after a poo I feel emotionally different, my mood lifts like I pooed out negative feelings Confused I’m sure it’s not just related to constipation relief as only suffered from this recently

Skysblue · 09/05/2021 13:38

Constipation (mild) in the couple of days before period then extremely loose and urgent movements during period, several times a day. Especially if I have coffee, which I have learned to avoid during period!!

andtheweedonkey · 09/05/2021 13:40

@ImaHogg

Well that has helped my anxiety over this, thank you.
I’m in peri and it’s definitely getting worse during this time. Cant wait until my periods are over.

Peri period poos can keep you close to a loo mainly for reassurance for quite a while. Blush

It's really not just you.

I'm the same (49) and just want all of this shit to end. Grin

Was it this link?

www.bodylogicmd.com/for-women/menopause-symptoms

DH occasionally goes through the list playing meno-bingo ticking off all the ones I have.

He's still alive...just
LadyCatStark · 09/05/2021 13:44

Yeah it’s totally normal! TMI but I actually look forward to having a good clear out Blush.

I was diagnosed with IBS when I lived in the UK with no proper investigation which was always bad around my periods. Within a week of moving abroad, I was diagnosed with multiple ovarian cysts including a 22cm on which was twisted. Removed it, had a colonoscopy which showed some scars from diverticular cular fusing (probably from the inflammation) and haven't had a runny poo for 13 years. I used to have to keep a bag in the car before that. It's often a lazy diagnosis.

CookPassBabtridge · 09/05/2021 14:24

Yes I don't know if mine are more regular but definitely more... loose Grin

OhWhyNot · 09/05/2021 14:30

Thank you andtheweedonkey that’s a very interesting site I have saved it. I’ve never heard of tingling tongue symptoms. I shall find it very useful as I’m peri menopausal

This one was an mn thread a poster had asked what symptoms you have before during and after or something along those lines it was so interesting and that the changes we go through as we get older, after having a baby etc

Your husband likes to live dangerously 😬

VestaTilley · 09/05/2021 14:35

Yep, always a seemingly upset stomach on day 1-2 of my period - though that’s only been the case as I’ve got older

xela21 · 09/05/2021 14:44

Also a victim of this.

Am I the only one or does anyone else get woken up with the urge to do a poop on day1-3? What about getting numb pain deep inside just before/during a poop? Sometimes lightheadedness? Then fine for the rest of the day and these symptoms only during day 1-3, totally fine rest of the month. Just me?

Teateaandmoretea · 09/05/2021 14:57

I once had a conversation about this with a doctor who confirmed this was normal. Up to then I’d always assumed it was just me.
