To think that the mirena coil is...

... gradually making me gain weight and making it very hard to lose it!

I would say in the two years I’ve had the mirena I’ve gained over a stone and a half, and I’m very petite beforehand and only gained weight if I had weeks of Indulgent eating.

I love the mirena for its benefits (no periods whatsoever), hassle free- but it’s getting me down that I don’t fit in my clothes comfortably and even with an active lifestyle I’m on the podgier side.

For reference I do one spin class a week, one workout, 19,000 steps a day minimum. Tend to fast until midday/1pm other than a coffee. Don’t drink booze in excess.

Just wondering others perspectives and own experiences!

Haven’t nnoticed weight gain yet, which is just as well as am already overweight and struggle to lose. But my skin has gone all weird... pores look very deep. And migraines much worse. I’m thinking of getting rid and going for acupuncture. instead to try and sort out my heavy bleeding

Watto1 · 08/05/2021 12:35

The same thing happened to me. As well as putting on weight, I came out in spots, had the moods from hell and went off sex completely. I stuck it out for 9 months. Unfortunately the extra weight took a while to come off but the other symptoms disappeared almost immediately.

itsgettingwierd · 08/05/2021 12:39

I didn't notice it with mirena.

But I have noticed it with the northisterone I have to take daily because the damn things kept coming out and didn't stop me flooding every 36 hours.

So I guess progesterone type hormones could have different effects on different people?

Overoptimistix · 08/05/2021 12:49

I had the same, couldn't shift the increasing weight gain despite really making an effort!

Bubbletiers · 08/05/2021 12:55

Thanks for your replies. Obviously lockdown was partly to blame but I really do eat well and not that much in comparison to others (able to compare my intake during lockdown) - I don’t snack on biscuits, drink only water tea or coffee with a tiny bit of milk. I’m actively trying to lose weight and it’s just not happening!

Highly irritating really as the only way to find out is to have it out and it’s not like the weight loss would be instant.

I can’t comment on the sex drive etc as I’m single.

My concern is I can’t take any other type of pill as I have had a variety of dreadful symptoms/reactions.

I don’t have weight gain and am on my second mirena since my twins were born 9 yrs ago. Also love not having periods and my sex drive is quite high (mid 40s and do it once or twice a week). I’m pretty active though. No mood swings or spots. I suppose it must affect people differently.

SuperSue77 · 08/05/2021 13:01

A friend's mirena was accidentally dislodged during an internal exam and for the few weeks while she waited for a new one to be put in she said her sex drive increased, much to her husband’s delight!

lioncitygirl · 08/05/2021 13:04

Is that the one with the hormones? To my understanding- the copper one hasn’t got the weight gain, and it’s still called the coil? (It’s something I want to get)

MatildaTheCat · 08/05/2021 13:04

I’ve had them for 25 years and did gain weight ( probably lifestyle not Mirena) and lost it too. What age are you? I think that has the biggest effect on gaining and slow loss.

dazzlerdo · 08/05/2021 13:12

I'm the same had mine in 10 months. I've gained about 7lb and not done anything different. I do watch what I eat and I can not lose it at all.
Plus my sex drive has completely gone, I don't have periods but do have random days when I will bleed a little.
I'm thinking of getting mine took out but not sure what to try

Bubbletiers · 08/05/2021 13:22

I am 30 all down hill from here 😂

I think I’ll stick with it for another 6 weeks and monitor my weight whilst increasing exercise.

I definitely have a slow metabolism and I have had my thyroid checked.

I had my second mirena removed 6 months ago after 2 years (first was in for 5, so 7 years total). Had it removed because I just didn't feel myself and all the symptoms I was suffering suddenly exacerbated when I had a surprise mini period - I had a full gynae check up and she suggested I have it remove it and see how I went.

Definitely did gain weight and couldn't lose it. The day after it was removed, my mood and general demeanour was noticeabley better (to others as well) and depression, anxiety and intrusive thoughts all disappeared too. Since having it out, have so much more motivation and planning some big changes I wouldn't have been emotionally strong enough to make in the last 7 years.

Other more physical symptoms- less facial hair, no more outbreaks (which I'd never suffered from pre-Mirena), my head-hair is much thicker and losing less, sleeping better and I was previously suffering from random sweats where I'd be sitting still and suddenly look like I'd had a hose turned on me!

I've lost the weight gained (a dress size) in first lockdown, but not much further (definitely more to go!) But I would have expected to put much more on in the last 5 months with the 2nd lockdown + 2 month long period!

I was evangelical about it when I had my first fitted, but looking back I can see all these symptoms were present then and have ramped up since.

Youdontknowwhatyoureonabout · 08/05/2021 13:35

Yep. Put on loads of weight in the 9 months I had it in (bled every day too but that’s a whole other issue) I had a very active job but put so much weight on a colleague actually patted my tummy and asked if I had news! My moods were horrendous and my mental health took a dive.
I was begging to have it removed in the end.

Thanks everyone!!

I have just checked, I don't actually have the Mirena- they put in something called Levosert- anyone have this?
