Coaching and podcasting hand in hand with narcissism?

I know of a woman who has a string of failed businesses behind her and who has now set herself up as a relationship coach (focused on a particular group of extremely vulnerable women) and now podcaster. I’ve worked with vulnerable women my whole life and the thought of this woman working with women and exploiting them for these (surely imagined) six figure salaries makes me feel sick. She’s an absolute narcissist and fantasist. AIBU thinking that these women are a particular type?

Does she have any qualifications in coaching or counselling? If not, hopefully she won't get very far with it. Unfortunately it's a highly unregulated industry and people don't always know what to look for when they are trying to find support. It sounds like it won't be very ethical but there's not a lot that can be done really as people can spend their money where they like if it's private coaching :(

What is her podcast about? Is she having any success with any of this so far?

Tiredofbs · 08/05/2021 07:08

Just another insta coach... claiming being a human being for the past thirty plus years gives her years of coaching ‘experience’. If she has a qualification it’s one of those set up by coaches for coaches training other coaches. Her podcast, who knows, but from what I can see on my Insta this is run of the mill now. Call yourself a coach, set up website, start podcast, claim years of experience. It just feels VERY exploitative of vulnerable women AND thus stuff is totally unregulated!

From what you’ve described, I can’t see how she is making a career out of it, let alone a six figure salary

Narcissists don’t have a huge amount of sticking power, and don’t work very hard at things so it might just blow over when she doesn’t get the instant recognition she is craving from this

‘From what you’ve described, I can’t see how she is making a career out of it, let alone a six figure salary’

I think what is playing on my mind most is the fact these people (not just this one) are charging hundreds of pounds for time with them and dodgy courses and waxing lyrical about how they’re ‘helping’ people. I just can’t square that hole in my head. I’ll happily dispense years of advice around relationships and dating to anyone for a glass of wine 🤣🤣🤣

They might charge hundreds of pounds but who is paying it?

Instagram is the channel for curators. Whatever you're seeing on there is chosen by her to project success.

It's at Companies House or her accountant where the real truth lies - most people in this game are not making what they project they are (but who hires a life coach who DOESN'T project some kind of spiritual, personal or financial success?)

Just ignore her - in two years time she'll be a traditional counsellor, or have her own macaroon baking business, or will be a travel planner.

I know a lady like this. She is a life coach. She’s one of the most neurotic women I know. She has had several melt downs in school as her kids are out of control and is refusing to divorce her DH even though he is living with some one else in another country. She doesn’t do pod casts but lots of facebook live sessions

Ha! Two jobs she hasn’t yet had a go at, believe you and me any ‘creative’ career path, she’s done it AND FAILED!

Hotankles, that’s it, how can these people possibly delve out advice to vulnerable people? Honestly blows my mind that level of arrogance!

I could have written your post word for word op. Someone I went to school with and follow on SM has gone down exactly this route. Her pages are just such utter nonsense. She’s a relationship, sex and dating coach! The thought that anyone would want to listen to her advice is laughable if they actually knew her life story! BUT I have noticed that the only attention she seems to get is from other ‘coaches’, or businesses, vast majority see right through the narcissism. But I get the worry around vulnerable women and lack of regulation.
