I find it odd if you can not apricate some one of the same sex , everyone has a different idea of what / who is good looking the sex doesn't really come into it , particularly if you find them appealing because they are clever / funny .
Pre covid me and my DB often went out for meals / beers together and we would often point out ( very subtly someone that we thought he other would fancy ( so DB would point out men to me and I would point out women to him ) we both knew what we looked for in our fantisy dates .

Of course you can appreciate people whose gender you're not attracted to...for me it's just a different feeling. There's not that excitement that comes with it.

I happened to mention this over many years to my DH, just causal "oh she's pretty etc" and it resulted in the peak of his sex pest years he asking to arrange a threesome.
