To prefer Cava over Prosecco?

There. I said it.

I love champagne! Could drink it all day if my liver and bank account allowed, but as a substitute, I honestly do think Cava or English sparkling wine is usually so much nicer than Prosecco!

It's usually far too sweet and actually makes me feel quite sick, but everyone seems to love it....but me.

YANBU: Prosecco is massively overrated
YABU: Prosecco all the way

You can good examples of both. There’s loads of cheap sweet Prosecco out there so it’s got a bad reputation. The Aldi organic one is nice.

partyatthepalace · 01/05/2021 11:42

Prosecco is almost always too bloody sweet

Although Carva often reminds me of licking someone’s skin Grin

ImInStealthMode · 01/05/2021 11:43

Me too OP! Prosecco is what it is, but I prefer a nice dry Cava when I have the opportunity!

Upside; it's usually cheaper in the supermarket due to not being as popular.

Downside; it's not stocked in any bars due to not being as popular.

Roll on the days we can go back to Spain!

FrankiesKnuckle · 01/05/2021 11:46

Yep, cava and cremant here too.
Aldi often do a lovely cremant at £7.99.

Dobbyisahouseelf · 01/05/2021 11:48

Cava with paella sounds perfect!

Mapletreelane · 01/05/2021 11:54

Just thinking though as I'm just hoovering, drinks go in cycles anyway. My parents used to drink gin in the 80s but as a teen in 90s my friendd and I didn't touch it. And look at gin now. Flavoured vodkas were huge in the 90s, I remember vodka bars everywhere. I thought I was the epitome of sophistication in the 00s drinking my Chardonnay. I've just discovered in the last year a new red, Malbec which has overtaken my beloved Shiraz. Flavours and tastes and trends change so much over time.

RampantIvy · 01/05/2021 11:55

Our local supermarkets don't sell sweet prosecco, just brut or extra dry, which has the same sweetness as cava.

FredaFox · 01/05/2021 11:56

Champagne cremant or cava for me over Prosecco (though I wouldn’t turn it down 😂)

Timeforfizz · 01/05/2021 12:32

Ah, I'm glad I'm not alone.

To those saying it's not really a AIBU question, well obviously it's just a bit of fun Smile Of course it's not really unreasonable to have a preference.

I shall definitely be adding Crement to the shopping list!

Cava much nicer than Prosecco. Cremant is great too. If you fancy some good Italian fizz look for franciacorta, it's made like champagne and delicious.

Timeforfizz · 01/05/2021 12:36

Hmm I can't seem to view the votes 🤔

@Sarcobaleno, ooo thanks! I love everything else Italian, so shall definitely be looking out for this.

You’re not wrong OP. And I’ve tried many many bottles, just to make sure WinkGrin.
Cava or Cremant are good but by far the best is English sparking wine from Chapel Down - I prefer this over Champagne tbh. In fact I might order a case now Grin.

AuntieMarys · 01/05/2021 12:43

Sainsburys do a lovely Cremant 11.99

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 01/05/2021 12:47

Yanbu to have any preferences - the world would be terribly dull if everyone liked the same things.
Cremant for me too no champagne budget for me, prosecco gives me heartburn.
I do have grudging admiration for the marketing people who have enabled the ubiquitousness of prosecco though. Along with rebranding of cider which I have always loved.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/05/2021 12:47

Yanbu because many people do prefer cava.

I enjoy both I must say! Champagne I like some but not others - not knowledgeable enough to know which it will be when someone opens a bottle though!

Iamnotminterested · 01/05/2021 12:57

A few years ago we stayed on a very swish campsite near Venice, and the on-site supermarket had a serve yourself Prosecco machine that worked out at about €3 per litre. Grin

DinosaurDiana · 01/05/2021 12:59

I much prefer Prosecco to champagne and cava.

DinosaurDiana · 01/05/2021 13:00

Sainsbury’s do a delicious pink Prosecco in their best range.

SellFridges · 01/05/2021 13:00

Prosecco I find sweet. Much prefer Cava or Cremant.

DinosaurDiana · 01/05/2021 13:02

You can get dry Prosecco, I only drink the dry or very dry ones.

Isn't that what the chat topic is for Grin

The session with AIBU is a complete mystery to me

Anyway afaik you can't help what your tastebuds like so people will have different preferences, no right or wrong just a fact of biology.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/05/2021 13:10

I don't find prosecco sweet (except the one I tried in Italy). I buy the dry kind, which they send to the UK. It's a much simpler fizzy drink though. It lacks the yeasty taste of champagne and cava.

NeedNewKnees · 01/05/2021 13:15

I agree that Crémant is lovely.

It goes in cycles - before Prosecco got popular we were awash in dog-rough cheap Cava; Prosecco was a nice alternative.

Now it’s the reverse - you can’t swing a cat without hitting a display of cheap and over-sweet Prosecco and the only Cavas still around are the good ones.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 01/05/2021 13:28

YANBU. Prosecco is horrible sugary sweet pop.
Cava, Cremant, and Champagne all the way!!!
