Has this happened to anyone else, I made a Facebook account but didn’t put any pictures on it as I don’t like putting pictures of myself online. My profile picture is just a flower, Anyway I put my name and my middle name rather than my full name as again don’t want people searching for me, I only use it to keep in contact with family members etc on there and some old friends and also because there are some good Facebook support groups I’ve joined, anyway today I’ve noticed my account has been suspended for no reason, I have not posted anything offensive etc in fact I don’t post much, it said to upload a picture of myself for them to review it which I have and now it says thanks for submitting it but basically they can’t guarantee they will actually review it so that means it will just basically be closed. Aibu to think this is weird?! Has anyone else had this?

It’s to stop spam/catfish accounts etc. Essentially, you gave them nothing to indicate you were a genuine user especially as you don’t post much and your profile photo wasn’t of you - but they will probably reinstate.

Happycat1212 · 29/04/2021 11:32

Hmm I could get that if it was a dating site or whatever but I’m not using Facebook to meet people or make friends so why do I need a pic? Thinking of my friends list most of them don’t even use there real names my sister has a completely different name as she’s a secondary school teacher and it stop pupils looking her up! So seems Very weird. They didn’t say they would definitely review it it said they might but they might not basically

There's a hell of a lot of trolling/abuse on Facebook which they are having to crackdown on so it's nothing to do with whether you would use it to meet people or not. I think (and hope) that eventually you will need to verify your identify before being allowed an account on most social media platforms.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 29/04/2021 11:38

Facebook don't like fake profiles. They never have. They directly impact on profitability, as does having multiple accounts.

So they suspend accounts that flag up as being fake, or that are reported, and ask for proof that it's legit, and your only account.

Your sister will be asked to change her name when she flags up to them or someone reports her - they'll make it a condition of reinstating her account.

It's not necessarily a bad thing. Privacy settings will stop people that you're not friends with from being able to see anything you don't want them too, and people don't tend to spout as much abuse when they're using their real name.

MustBeTheWine · 29/04/2021 11:39

As PP have said FB are just being cautious due to all the trolling and abuse.

Happycat1212 · 29/04/2021 11:40

Hmm interesting still wouldn’t want exes looking me up or seeing my pics hence why not putting my whole name or pic. I get why they do it it’s more that the message said that they may or may not review it. So they are not guaranteeing that they actually will.

OP I think it will be necessary at some point to stop relying on FB so much

Happycat1212 · 29/04/2021 16:28

Where does it say I rely on it so much? My account been blocked for no reason and they can’t say they will even review it so I think it’s normal to wonder why, I barely use it but the support groups were nice for advice and information, was that nasty little dig so necessary? Did it make you feel better?

In my opinion FB don't give a flying fuck about trolling and abuse - but they want to mine as much data about you as possible so they can sell data to advertisers (and others). Its a great opportunity for them to claim they "need to verify identity" i.e. only allow accounts with people's real (and full) data so it is more valuable. FB are not a force for good in any way in my view.

Sorry if my post read the wrong way. I wasn't having a go at you. I mean, in general, we all need to find alternative media. These organisations have too much power, they are demanding too much in exchange for very little (what can we demand from them, for instance?)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/04/2021 16:42

We had to provide proof of us being who we are when handling pages because it changed hands.

I personally don't have picture of myself either. No issue with that. Maybe someone reported your account.

Obviously they want as much data.

If you are not paying for the product, you are the product.

Happycat1212 · 29/04/2021 16:52

I don’t know many people that use their real first and last name on Facebook! Most of my friends either have nicknames or real first name with a random Last name that’s not connected to them

freecuthbert · 29/04/2021 17:02

I don't use facebook but I'm pretty sure it's part of the terms and conditions that you have to use your real name (first and last name). It doesn't matter if you know people who haven't used their real names , it doesn't matter if you don't want people to look you up, that's just the way it is and they can and will suspend accounts if an algorithm identifies an account as fake. Not because they care about trolling at all, they couldn't give a flying fuck about any of that. It's so they can harvest your data, and what use would it be to them if some of that data is falsified.

ImTheWolfToday · 29/04/2021 17:31

Plenty of people do use fake names on Facebook but it is against the t&cs, it’s just bad luck if you get flagged up as possibly fake and have to prove who you are.
In terms of not wanting people to look you up, privacy setting are you me friend there.
