Sertraline

Just looking for people's experiences really.
I've been on 50mg sertraline for a year, ove been feeling alot better so have been taking 25mg for the last 2 months. I did phone GP before halving the dose and she said it's fine to do this and just decrease slowly.
Thing is, some days I feel really low, other days I'm great.
Would it do harm to take 50mg some days and 25mg on other days? Or should I just carry on with 25mg?

I wouldn't do that personally. I can't imagine you will achieve mental stability constantly taking inconsistent doses but I'm not a dr, just my thoughts,

Yes that's a point. The GP mentioned taking a tablet every other day so I thought that might have the same effect

*@LittleYellowBoat * I tried every other day when reducing Citalopram and found it better to actually take half a tablet every day. I''m only on 20mg anyway and they split quite easily. Unfortunately due to lockdown number whatever it is I'm back up to full dose but hoping to come off them at some point.!

Thanks for replying. When you went back up to full dose again did you suffer any side effects?

Hi just adding to this as I'm thinking of going back on sertraline. I was only on it for about 9 months a few years ago. I felt better but awful night sweats. I feel quite low at the moment and tempted to get back on them and hope for the best.

Tbh I think that indicates you need the 50, and you should take it back up.

AJ297 · 28/04/2021 07:22

The dose you take will take a few days to have any effect anyway. The chemicals build up gradually which is why they say it takes 4 weeks to have full effect when you start taking them. I wouldn't imagine taking a higher dose some days will take effect that day. It sounds like maybe you should go back up to 50mg and try again when you feel ready.

My DD has been on sertraline for years and whenever the dose has been changed, it’s still always the same amount each day. I think that, possibly, there’s a danger of the wrong amount being taken if it keeps changing; it’s far better to be consistent.

That said, if you’ve tolerated sertraline well and without side affects I wouldn’t be in a rush to go down and get off. It seems that you’re not ready if you’re still low here and there. It’s normally a longer term medication and is very safe.

Thankyou everyone, just seems strange I've been fine for a year, but then obviously I've been fine as I've been in 50mg! I guess I.will just go back to 50

take one and a hall 25mg tablets daily?

LittleYellowBoat · 28/04/2021 18:34

The tablets are so tiny! I can cut the 50mg in half but would be hard pushed to cut them in half again!

ask your GP to prescribe 25g tablets - they do have a score line on the tablets.
