AIBU?
I hope I didn't seem too weird.

Scattered my dad's ashes yesterday at the river, a spot which is slightly off the path.
Today I went to the spot but there were 3 other people there. I walked over and they looked up so I said something like I'm sorry to disturb you, I just wanted to take a moment. They said okay and I kind of sobbed "I scattered my dad's ashes here" to explain. I sat for only about a minute, during which time one of these strangers offered me a roll up. (No thanks) then I left saying I hope they had a nice day.
The group seemed a similar age to me (around 30) if that matters. I'm hoping that this is an understandable enough interaction and I shouldn't feel weird about going back another day.

I'm sorry about your Dad x
I don't think it's weird at all, you do what brings you a small slither of comfort
My Mum has my Dads ashes in a hand made urn (just looks like an ornament, you'd never guess) on the side board. We were going to
Scatter them, but mum wants to be scattered with him. We both like picking the urn up & having a hug.
Do not give a crap what anyone else thinks!

@marriednotdead

Offering a ciggie was meant with kindness as people often use them as stress relief, they probably felt sad for you in the moment and then got on with their day.
I agree with this. I’m a rabid anti-smoker and I would see it as a kind and thoughtful gesture.

Not weird at all, it sounds like they were understanding and kind so please don't worry about it. We scattered my dad in a bush and had to keep stopping when people walked past, I wish we would have just asked for a minute because I guarantee we looked a lot more weird than you!
