Tracking if mobile data not switched on

ihavethehighground · 24/04/2021 13:45

If a mobile phone's roaming data isn't switched on, you can't locate the phone.
Is there a way around this? DS is forgetting to switch it on before he goes out

Not as far as I know but we've been very firm with them when they forgot to switch on data and told them there will be consequences next time if they forget etc as it's part of being allowed out.

Hadjab · 24/04/2021 13:53

Why would you switch data roaming off? Surely his phone automatically connects to your home WiFi, so no need to manually switch between the two

ihavethehighground · 24/04/2021 15:43

When he goes out he has to manually switch on mobile data or Goggle Maps etc cannot locate his position

On every phone I've ever had, if you leave both WiFi and mobile data on constantly, it automatically connects to WiFi when you're at home, and automatically connects to mobile data when you're out.

Are you sure he's telling the truth about how his phone works?

Chickenlickeninthepot · 24/04/2021 15:53

Think he's telling a porkie....

ihavethehighground · 24/04/2021 16:05

He's forgetful

Yes this!

Unless he manually switches off the mobile data when he is home, It should automatically connect when hes out of wifi range.

So If he's remembering to switch it off when he is in, surely he can't forget to switch it on when he is outConfused

iPhones have tracking without data or wifi enabled, you just need to turn it on.

Means of course you can't choose not to be tracked, so that's a good reason not to own an iPhone if you have any worries over spousal etc. abuse.

He’s quite probably not being truthful - methinks he objects to being tracked. How old is he OP?
ihavethehighground · 24/04/2021 18:15

Wow so unkind. He is definitely not lying.

OP posts:
Lolwhat · 24/04/2021 18:34

Why are you tracking him?😳😳

ihavethehighground · 24/04/2021 19:34

He has some SEN and poor sense of time

OP posts:
Jumpers268 · 24/04/2021 19:38

Why is he turning mobile data off? No there'd be no way to track his phone without mobile data/WiFi on. I don't think people are meaning to be unkind. When I was a teenager I'd have turned data off to stop my mum knowing where I was. I was a nightmare teenager though.

ponderingpottery · 24/04/2021 19:42

In all fairness if your wifi is shoddy some phones automatically use 3G to make up for poor wi-fi connection. Had this problem before where my home wi-fi is crap and I couldn’t work out why my mobile data bill was getting higher when I was connected to wi-fi. There’s actually an option on iPhone settings which says something like ‘Use mobile data to support poor wi-fi connection’ - see if you can find this and turn it off OP, then he can just keep mobile data switched on all the time and it won’t be used when he’s connected to wi-fi.

megletthesecond · 24/04/2021 19:44

I think Google family link can track with mobile phone masts /satellite if they don't have data. DD ran out of data and her route home zig zagged back and forth although she was home on time.

ibblebibbledibble · 24/04/2021 19:55

Why is he switching it off OP?

DipSwimSwoosh · 24/04/2021 20:47

I hate the idea of being tracked. Glad to know mobile data has to be switched on. Mine never is.

sirfredfredgeorge · 24/04/2021 20:53

If you have an iPhone, you can be tracked with mobile data and wifi off, your device reports its location via other local iOS devices, so it doesn't track you if you're on your own in the wilds of a moor, but walking through a town it will still be tracking you.

It's a useful feature for finding lost or stolen phones of course, but it's not so good if your parent or partner is tracking you.

FizzyApricot · 24/04/2021 20:58

Why is he having to switch it off when he's at home?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 24/04/2021 21:00

On every phone I've ever had, if you leave both WiFi and mobile data on constantly, it automatically connects to WiFi when you're at home, and automatically connects to mobile data when you're out.

This. If he has SEN, does he know this? He doesn’t need to turn it off, so he won’t need to remember to turn it back on.

sweetclems · 24/04/2021 21:06

It's not roaming data surely, isn't that when you're abroad... should would with just standard Mobile data
