to think I can't be the only one?

After a couple of nights my pillow takes on a brownish 'stain' where I tend to rest my head. I wrecked my brain to try and work out what it is (especially since I haven't worn make up for a long time) so all I can think is hair dye (dark brown).

But surely I would have heard of this 'phenomenon' before if this is a thing. On the other hand, surely I can't be the only person whose box hair dye stains the pillow even after it's been several washes since I coloured my hair.

Anyone?

I've heard of this from friends who dye their hair.

SummerHouse · 21/04/2021 16:26

That or fake tan? I would buy brown pillow cases. Grin

vickibee · 21/04/2021 16:28

Ear wax maybe

youmakemydreamscometrue · 21/04/2021 16:33

I used to dye my hair dark brown religiously and never had any transfer onto pillowcases.

Do you wash your face before bed? Could it be makeup/skincare/face oils marking your pillowcase?

FTEngineerM · 21/04/2021 16:34

Erm nope, I dye my hair black, have white pillow cases and don’t get this?

Not fake tan as I haven't used it in over a year.

I do hope it's not ear wax because I clean my ears in the shower every morning!

@FOJN that sounds reassuring, in a sort of way.

@youmakemydreamscometrue was it a permanent colour? If so, do you remember what brand it was? It's quite annoying/embarrassing because it doesn't even come 100% off in the wash :-(

@youmakemydreamscometrue Yes I do clean my face before bed and put moisturiser on.

Dribble?

HilaryBriss · 21/04/2021 16:38

I use Schwarzkopf Live purple hairdye and I always end up with a pinkish tone on my pillowcases, and on my towels after I dry my hair.

LettyLoman · 21/04/2021 16:39

I think its probably dribble and sweat.

youmakemydreamscometrue · 21/04/2021 16:40

@NeedATan I used a mix permanent and semi permanent dyes and various brands, usually whatever was on offer.

Is your skincare dry when you lie on your pillow? It could possibly be something in your creams causing the mark.
DH gets a marked pillow case but it's because he's a mink and doesn't wash his face every night before bed and occasionally drools

Horehound · 21/04/2021 16:40

Deffo. Well I don't have it with my pillow but I used to rest my head on the wall in bed and I left a brown stain there! I have very greasy hair

Horehound · 21/04/2021 16:41

And that was when I'd used a box dye

NeedATan · 21/04/2021 16:44

So it could be the hair dye. Huh! Oh well, I will try and soak my sheets in bleach before washing, next time. Thanks everyone.

Do you use the root touch hair spray ? I use this during lockdown to cover my greys ( i havent found any hair dye to cover greys) It destroys my pillows. Now i have pillow protectors under my pillow covers to stop the pillow getting destroyed
