To take a year off/career break

I’ve done really well in my career and have reached a very senior level in my early 30s. But this year has thrown up some challenges and I’m seriously thinking of taking a year off work just to travel/live. AIBU?

Do it.
Work will still be there when you get back.
If you're a lawyer take two years, you'll need them.

If you can afford it why not. You never know what is going to happen in life. Have some fun while you can.

I don’t think there’ll be proper travelling just yet. I’d say backpacking is a year or two away. I’d wait. Then do it!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/04/2021 20:57

If you can afford it, I’d say go for it!

If you can afford it, do it. I might wait until next year for no other reason than covid might not be such a thing and travel easier.

Do you have kids or a mortgage? If not then hell yes you should do it while you can!

YouCantCallMeBetty · 20/04/2021 21:02

Not you're totally not BU. I'd bloody love to do it but can't right now. If you can then go for it, work will be there in some form or another when you're ready to go back.

Do it OP. I'm in the middle of a two year career break. I went and got a part time job in a gp's office so I could have a small amount coming in. My dc are 6 and 8 and I'm enjoying being home for them a bit more. I'm a teacher so my job isn't that long hours wise but I was feeling a bit burnt out to be honest. I'll be going back full time sept 2022.

SantiagoSky · 20/04/2021 21:17

I wouldn't during Covid since travel/live is going to be less fun. Also, are you in a profession that is affected by job cuts?

brizzlewizzle · 20/04/2021 21:22

Always take the trip!
