I rent a flat that has velux windows in one of the bedrooms. The window don’t have blinds. This has not been an issue for the last 5 years as it was not used as a bedroom. Now it’s being used as a bedroom the windows need blinds.

Should my landlord provide them? I asked him and he said no, but he would fit them if I bought them.

When I eventually move out I wouldn’t be taking the blinds with me, so why should I fork out £45 per window?

YANBU - landlord should pay
YABU - you should pay

Of course you should pay.

I’m in my second rented property, first one had a mixture of blinds up, I hated them and paid for new blinds throughout, I left them when I moved. My new home, didn’t have any blinds up at all, again o have purchased new blinds. I intend to live here for quite a while and think the cost is worth it.

I've used this company before and they were cheap and did the job. Might be worth a look:

We rent and there were (old) vertical blinds up at each window when we moved in 7 years ago. We’ve recently decorated throughout and we and the landlord went halves on new blinds as we wanted better ones than cheap verticals and he didn’t want to shell out fully for the ones we wanted so we compromised.

Obviously the blinds will be left when we eventually move out.

FrogFairy · 20/04/2021 15:18

If you buy portable blackout blinds they fit with suction cups and can come with you when you move.

Lou98 · 20/04/2021 15:25

YABU, To be honest most blinds are made to measure, very few windows are a standard blind size so very few people can take them when they move.

LL's don't need to provide blinds/curtains. It's a personal choice if you want them or not

FireflyRainbow · 20/04/2021 15:31

You would pay for that OP.

Velux windows come in a few standard sizes.
Lou98 · 20/04/2021 17:00

@eurochick then that's more reason that the OP (in my opinion) is BU. If they're standard sizing then she can take them when she moves, it would be a choice not to. If she doesn't have the same size windows in a new place they could be sold. It's still not the LL's responsibility

Fabpinky · 20/04/2021 17:54

Ok ok the people have spoken I hold my hands up to being unreasonable. I will buy them myself.

(Not that I had a choice anyway 😂)

That's so strange, I rented for 10 years and have never had to provide my own window dressings. Pain in the bum when I bought my first house as I didn't have any and had no idea about buying or handing curtains and blinds.
