Why !?

This is petty but why do so many posters not add their exclamation/question marks to the end of their sentences? Why do they leave a space ?? They look so odd just floating there !! I’ve not seen this anywhere else.

Think you've missed a comma or two!

Fembot123 · 15/04/2021 21:39

I’ve written it that way to illustrate my point !!

A-ha!
I knew that!

Fembot123 · 15/04/2021 21:45

😀 I like the placement of your exclamation marks so I’ll believe you.

StoneofDestiny · 15/04/2021 21:52

CoRhona · 15/04/2021 21:54

EscapeDragon · 15/04/2021 21:56

I have never noticed this phenomenon.

No idea but I hate this too!

Cornishmumofone · 15/04/2021 22:02

For an interrobang, it needs to be the questionmark followed by the exclamation mark.

Ok?!

TaraR2020 · 15/04/2021 23:55

On my phone its autocorrect and I can't be bothered to correct, you all know what I mean.

Wainwriter · 15/04/2021 23:59

Totally off topic, but I've just leant a new word. I never knew it was called interrobang before. I love it - my new favourite word!

therocinante · 16/04/2021 00:01

I know someone who writes all her Instagram captions like this:

Fun ... Outside today ! ... Amazing weather ... Such a nice time with the girls ... 🥰

Tons of ellipses, spaces everywhere. Chaos. YANBU OP.

CherATaleOrTwo · 16/04/2021 00:29

I have a bad habit of doing this when texting (would never do it formally).
I use it when I mean the general sentence to be a question, but I realise that I've haven't written it as question, so instead of bothering to rewrite it, I just do a space and a question mark to indicate a general question-like sentiment Blush
For example,
Friday 1pm ?
Surely she didn't say that ????
Oh ??

I know it's a terrible habit and I'm trying to stop!

Interrobang! Wow, what a word. I am going to use this in a sentence as soon as possible. I’m not sure how yet, but I will!
JaneJeffer · 16/04/2021 00:56

It's iPhone's fault. Sometimes it makes a gap before a question mark and sometimes it doesn't so if you don't notice immediately you've already posted and it's too late.

ZaraW · 16/04/2021 05:26

Reminds me of being a teenager when everyone used them. Emojis are more annoying.

TheClaws · 16/04/2021 05:34

Why are you placing a space before your exclamation marks and question marks? That bothers me.

sykadelic · 16/04/2021 05:41

I'm one-upping to 10$.

No. Just, no. It's $10.00.

SchrodingersPomp · 16/04/2021 05:46

Interrobang? Fuck me, I've only just looked up "Schrodinger's cat".

cariadlet · 16/04/2021 05:56

The interrobang isn't a question mark followed by an exclamation mark; it's a single punctuation mark that was created in the 60s to express a surprised rhetorical question. It never really caught on which is a shame because it would be really useful.

There was an interesting episode about it on the 99%invisible podcast.
