To be annoyed when threads disappear

IzzieStevens · 12/04/2021 21:42

Clearly I need to get out more (lockdown permitting) but it’s so frustrating when you’re halfway through reading a really interesting thread and then it’s suddenly deleted.

I have very little going on these days and I get overly invested in other peoples dramas. It’s happened loads recently where I’ll be on page 3 of a 7 page thread and then poof, it’s gone.

Lighthearted, I promise Grin

@EarringsandLipstick have you tried looking way down your list of threads, for some reason on mine if a thread is deleted it goes to the bottom of the list so easy to miss if you have threads above it

EarringsandLipstick · 13/04/2021 10:44

Unless you've posted on a thread you won't see the deletion message which is why posters put little comments if they think it mighty disappear, maybe test that out

This is one of my pet peeves!

There's no need to put place marking comments! Posters should comment if they have something they want to add.

Otherwise, add it to your Watching list, and on the website, you'll see the deletion message.

You don't have to post or place mark.

Oh, interesting. I don't think so but I'll check it again next time.

It's only on the app I've an issue. The website is fine.

@Blankspace101

I’m shocked about the amount of stuff that gets deleted from MN. I don’t spend much time online but I’ve genuinely never came across it. I can only assume it’s to protect the reputation of MN as we’ve all seen people being piled on in the past.
You should be more surprised at how many people come on to MN to troll or goad!

Threads are mainly deleted if they're trolls or PBPs (previously banned posters - and there are some very persistent ones!). If they're threads about specific people or current news/legal stories, they might be deleted as they're deemed defamatory, or simply just voyeuristic. And it goes without saying that if someone has started a thread that's racist/sexist/homophobic/disablist then it will be deleted.

MNHQ will also delete posts (and sometimes threads) if they deem them to be 'not in the spirit' of the site, or if it descends into a bit of a bunfight. On the basis that it's not helping anyone.

bruffin · 13/04/2021 11:06

But not on the app (at least for me) in the last while, unless you're actually on the thread at the time of deletion.

I dont like the app partly for reasons like this so dont use it, the mobile site is so much better.

Lockheart · 13/04/2021 11:12

If you get invested in threads then more fool you. You have no idea what's made up (for attention, money, sexual kicks or otherwise) or bait from journalists / authors / survey takers looking for responses.

If you want something to entertain you which gives closure then I recommend a book or a TV series.

EarringsandLipstick · 13/04/2021 11:12

It's funny isn't it Bruffin I loved the mobile site for ages, then tried app & now I can't go back! Even with the minor irritations!

DynamoKev · 13/04/2021 11:58

This is my favourite thread ever - it's a classic!

emilyfrost · 13/04/2021 12:32

YANBU.

OP’s don’t like the responses so they get the thread deleted for “privacy reasons”, which is just a load of bullshit 🤷‍♀️

funinthesun19 · 13/04/2021 13:14

I always think the person who posted it might be worried about the consequences of the thread stays up, if someone sees it. Although it might have felt good at the time to get things off their chest, they might be terrified now that it’s all on the internet.

I do think their feelings are more important.

CharityDingle · 13/04/2021 13:33

OP, you can invent endings for the threads that disappear. Wink

blowinahoolie · 13/04/2021 14:47

Yes. One disappeared this morning about a mum wanting to know when she's going to meet her DD's boyfriend?

bootolou · 13/04/2021 14:49

It always dissapoints me when i'm getting into a good thread and then it gets deleted for having been a troll Angry Some of them are very innocent too!! I mean who'd troll about such mundane things.

bruffin · 13/04/2021 15:45

Wasnt that the same troll as the eloping 16 year old the other week
expectopelargonium · 13/04/2021 15:53

Whenever I start reading a fast-moving high drama thread I tend to take it all with a pinch of salt and assume that it won't last long. Sometimes I put them on my watchlist just for the deletion message.

Iheartbed · 13/04/2021 15:57

There was one yesterday where the op was “me and my dp earn £150k pa, own a 800k house, have 50k savings, 2 kids and we’re early thirties....are we wealthy??

Thread deletion message in 3, 2, 1...

TrickyD · 13/04/2021 16:48

There was a very recent thread where those who were sceptical were called 'Nancy Drews' by the pom-pom waving gullible aunties.
Sure enough, whoosh, it disappeared.

BIWI · 13/04/2021 17:30

Yep. Too many people here believe everything that they read!

blowinahoolie · 13/04/2021 19:06

Thanks bruffin for giving me the heads up👍 I didn't know it was a troll🤣 more fool me then😂
