Faux leather is not leather!!

So, so fed up with looking for a leather chair online. Looking for something on Ebay, where you can filter by "material". I put in leather, and still get hundreds and hundreds of fucking plastic chairs. It's not the sellers; they've listed them as "faux leather" but Ebay seem to think that it's the same thing. Grrrrr!!

YANBU, I filtered search recently for a leather biker jacket on ASOS because I wanted a real leather one, got loads of faux leather and my particular pet hate of now describing something as, “vegan leather”, not leather then? Hmm

coogee · 11/04/2021 14:53

"vegan leather”, not leather then?

'Plastic' doesn't sound so good.

The truth is often unpalatable.

Save fluffy animals and feck sea life Hmm

SoupDragon · 11/04/2021 14:56

"Vegan leather" would be leather made from vegans, surely?

VladmirsPoutine · 11/04/2021 15:17

Perhaps there's just not that many leather chairs up for sale?

True!
LawnFever · 11/04/2021 15:25

Yes! I once bought a jacket off eBay described as leather, when it arrived it was plastic so I complained and wanted to return it and the buyer wouldn’t accept she’d described it incorrectly at all!

eBay sided with me & I got a refund.

FeistySheep · 11/04/2021 15:27

eBay is really good at negative searches (unlike Amazon). Put in...

chair leather -faux -vegan

SoupDragon · 11/04/2021 15:28

@VladmirsPoutine

Perhaps there's just not that many leather chairs up for sale?
That isn't really relevant to the fact that plastic isn't leather.
Tommika · 11/04/2021 15:29

‘Faux leather’ includes the word ‘leather’
Therefore a search will find them

But if you use the advanced search then there is an exclusion box

www.ebay.co.uk/sch/ebayadvsearch

Don’t thinks there’s an advanced search on the app though.
As OP says you filter the search. But choosing leather in the ‘Material’ filter still brings forth faux leather

deadlinedaisy · 11/04/2021 15:56

YANBU. I've got this issue with mobile phone cases. Faux leather cases look naff and slip out of your hand much more easily than real leather, which has more grip. On Amazon, you often have to read through a lot of small print to find out whether a case is 'faux' or not. I can only find one real leather case for my phone type and it gets bad reviews for other reasons, so I'm case-less for now.

malmi · 11/04/2021 16:05

Use minus to exclude terms

Leather chair -faux -vegan

MenaiMna · 11/04/2021 16:16

On the (useless) app (in the absence of advanced search) from the first page use the search line "real leather" then filter for category "home and garden" subcat furniture subcat sofas and armchairs subcat chairs then further filters for colour, type and style e.g. brown recliner modern

deadlinedaisy · 11/04/2021 16:35

Another term used is PU Leather.

slashlover · 11/04/2021 16:35

leather -faux -vegan

FleetwoodRaincoat · 11/04/2021 16:49

Thanks for all the suggestions on how to find stuff - really shouldn't be that hard though. Why do they bother having two filter categories of Leather and Faux Leather if they just bring up the same results? And don't get me started on Amazon searches....

Also "pleather" (polyurethane).

I see M & S are now describing some of their non leather boots as "Vegan: Free from animal-derived ingredients or materials".

Mustbethemansfault · 14/04/2021 01:40

@deadlinedaisy could also be pull-up leather which is different to polyeurethane but most will have at least 1 layer of that anyway as they'll be semi aniline (if they're full aniline and on eBay then chances are they'll look like a bag of shite) even corrected grain which has 3 coats of PU on it are still leather, just means they're more durable and they have an even finish as the natural grain is buffed out so they lose the majority of their natural markings.

I sold them for 3 years and it was so boring I could probably make one through the shit I learned just to entertain myself doing it
