I ordered a bar light to go over my dining table. Got one from Dunelm Mill which was lovely but way too low - sadly we don't have lovely high Victorian ceilings. Got this one which, from the measurements I thought would sit a bit higher:

www.lightingcompany.co.ukadeline-copper-3-light-pendant-bar-with-ribbed-glass-shades-p15933/s16885

It came today and is just as long as the other one, but worse it has a black wire between the top and the bar as shown in this pic.

AIBU to think the picture is totally misleading and the wire really spoils the look, as well as making it way longer than it needs to be? I have an electrician coming on Thursday and can't find anything that's not ridiculously low! Do only people in Victorian houses have these kinds of lights? I would actually live with the length of this one though but the wire bit is ruining it for me!

Sorry for the rogue comma - very emotional about this!

Doesn't the wire slip back inside the copper tube?

CloudFormations · 10/04/2021 09:24

Can you trim the cable and rewire it?

JollyHolly30 · 10/04/2021 09:24

Doesn't the pole screw onto the light fitting, and the cable feed up inside it? 🤔

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 10/04/2021 09:25

You pull the wire up in to the bit that stta he's to the ceiling my understanding is or it can be trimmed. It's longer to allow for fitting

Onesnowynight · 10/04/2021 09:25

Aren’t you supposed to pull the wire up through? So it’s all copper??

JollyHolly30 · 10/04/2021 09:25

Cross posted with these other clever people 😁

insancerre · 10/04/2021 09:25

It’s adjustable so presumably you can adjust the length of the wire

Saz432 · 10/04/2021 09:26

😂

korawick12345 · 10/04/2021 09:26

yeah, the copper pole screws into the other bit and the wire gets pulled through

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/04/2021 09:27

It ahould absolutely be possible to pull the cable up or pull the copper part down.
It's telescopic, isn't it so it can be made longer or shorter

dementedpixie · 10/04/2021 09:27

Does the black wire not go inside the top bar?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 10/04/2021 09:27

The minimum drop is 60cm and max90cm. The wire is to allow for adjustment - per what the website says

Aquamarine1029 · 10/04/2021 09:27

The black wire will not show once it's installed. It's fed through the fitting and up into the base of the fixture.

rjacksmiss · 10/04/2021 09:30

I'd be more pee pee'd off at the colour. It looks more rose gold.

Out of interest, how much do electricians take these days to hang ceiling lights? I was quoted £30. Happy to pay obviously as I want it properly done, but is that the going rate? Seems a tiny bit steep.

flyingtartar · 10/04/2021 09:30

Blush Grin

Thank heaven for MN! Yes, it does feed through. Going to leave it now for the electrician to sort. So glad I posted rather than ringing the company and complaining... Flowers.

Yep, totally what everyone else said. I’m just placemarking for when the op realises.

HelpMeh · 10/04/2021 09:30

What they said... You won't see the wire.

Eminybob · 10/04/2021 09:31

X post Grin

Bluntness100 · 10/04/2021 09:31

Um the wire goes in the tube..you trim what you don’t need.

flyingtartar · 10/04/2021 09:32

Exactly what I've been quoted rjacksmiss. I think it's a bit more than I remember paying last time I had some fitted. I'm in a hurry an can't faff getting multiple quotes - most I spoke to were busy for weeks.

Chrispackhamspoodle · 10/04/2021 09:33

Op I hope you didn't send your Dunhelm one back for the same reason Smile

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 10/04/2021 09:34

🤣🤣 sorry OP but that's pretty funny. The wire cleay goes through the copper tube.

Perfect! Yeah absolutely same boat. Can't be bothered with the legwork. Hope you love the light when it's up! ☺️ x

Reflecting on the Dunelm Mill one, it was a different design but similar principle so probably could have been made shorter than its max length, yes! However, I do prefer this one so all good.
