What was your experience of it, if you live(d) there? Is there much poverty close ish to the city centre - or is that mostly in the banlieue?

Not lived there personally, my friend lived there for a year working as an au pair when we left school and I visited her a fair few times. She had an amazing time. Some of her observations were that some areas were very deprived compared to others: fires seemed quite common in the apartment buildings in some areas and one of her friends relatives sadly died in one.

We both were surprised at the amount of 'attention' aka harassment that we got from men on the street. Much worse than in London.

Depends if you’re central or outside. Then depends on which quartier you’re in. I adored the museums, I’m an Impressionist fan. It was cool walking round famous places and discovering other amazing places, but I found it hot and dusty in summer, busy, obviously full of tourists and bloody expensive. I’m going back decades but I doubt much has changed, although covid has probably had a huge effect.
