If you believe in redemption and heaven, how does it work?

I will preface by saying I don't believe, and without going into too much difficult backstory (that I have spoken about before but maybe not this username) I was raised with uncomfortable beliefs as a Christian (of sorts). I'm now atheist.

My brother has been doing a lot of youtube videos (we don't get on for reference, but I still watch them) preaching that asking forgiveness from God will save you, no matter how severe crimes.

Despite not believing, I take umbrage to thinking a rapist (my rapist!) could be accepted as a 'brother or sister' is heaven because he has faith and has spoken to God. However, I am doomed for all eternity because I have no belief. So AIBU to ask, if you believe in God, how does that view point work for you?

Simultaneously (and definitely not off the thread talking about Rose and Jack), what happens if you do remarry. Do you have to choose? Do you have both your lovers? How does that work?
