I've just read an advert from 1990 where they were advertising vaccums with hoses that connected to the wall so your dust could be gathered in a central repository...AIBU to suggest this would be the WORST possible waste of effort/plumbing/materials ever just to keep the carpet clean?

I see them all the time! They aren't just a 90s thing.

My grandad had one of these! In a new build town house in the 1990s! As a kid I thought it was the most amazing thing ever and sooooo futuristic Grin I think it all ended up in the garage

My house had all the plumbing for one when we bought it 10 years ago.
I have now sealed up the outlets and plastered over but it wouldn’t be a large job to open it up again and put a new mother in.

Motor in not mother as mothers have enough to do

They are quite popular in new build houses in the US. Everything is out of sight and no machine to lug about. Wish I had one here.

My sister has this in Australia. The hose is so long it takes up as much room in the cupboard as a hoover. The noise is horrendous (think jumbo jet) and it doesn't pick up all that well apparently, possibly as the hose is so long.

I was thinking about these the other day, I went to the ideal home show circa 1997/98 and they had them in the model homes there.
Imagine the potential lost hamster situation Shock

I've never heard of this - if it wasn't for other posters replying positively I'd think you picked up an April fools joke!

It sort of reminds me of the old "Bunny" incinerators in the school toilets - just a mystery box on the wall you crammed your san pro into.
