Forced to do this work?

We get assigned cases at work and are targeted. I’ve had one of the most difficult cases assigned to me that I’ve ever known. It’s got three other departments having worked on it, they still have pending work that I would have to cross reference, the client needed it done by last month (multiple complains raised) - and it lands on me in April.

I just can’t do it. I’ve tried so hard - I reached out to my manager and explained the situation.

I’ve now been told that I have to do it tomorrow. But I physically can’t do it so what do I do? I have two people senior to me that refuse to touch it because it’s that difficult and they basically can’t be bothered with it.

Do you have the necessary training and skills to do this job?

stackemhigh · 07/04/2021 19:54

Have you set out all your concerns in an email to your manager and the senior staff?

VettiyaIruken · 07/04/2021 19:55

If you physically can't do it then there's really no option but for it to remain undone and you explain why you couldn't do it.

What did your manager say? If it's such a tricky bit of work that no one else would touch and people have failed to complete previously, it's foolish and unfair of them to just dismiss your concerns, if that's what they have done. Contact them in writing, if you can put into points what you feel you aren't able to complete, and what support you require going forward.

Send an email to the two senior people telling them you cannot complete the work by the deadline set and list the reasons this will not be possible. Tell them what you need to complete the work, propose a deadline for those things to be delivered and offer a new date for completion. Emphasise this is not a refusal to do the work but that you are unable to meet their expectations owing to lack of available material you would need to cross reference.

I would have done if it had come to my department at the start. But because it’s been “touched” by countless different people and now 4 departments I don’t even know where to begin.

I’m annoyed because the work was previously rejected by two different colleagues in my department and sent to a different department to be worked - when it was obvious we should have dealt with it. Now I’m lumbered with the consequences and the people that caused it domino effect don’t even have to be involved.
