to ask why you can buy 1% hydrocortisone over the counter but not 0.5%?

I probably am but I’m posting here for traffic.

The tingling feeling of eczema has begun on my eyelids. I know it’s going to get worse and the last time I suffered I ended up getting 0.5% steroid cream from the GP.

Currently I can’t even get through to the GP to get in the queue, wait 30 mins, to then get through to a receptionist. It’s constantly engaged, I’ve tried numerous times today but I’m at work so can’t try constantly!

I popped into Boots and I can’t get 0.5% over the counter but I can buy 1%! Why?

I know the whole, can’t use on eyelids etc but I’ve been prescribed it from the GP before, just temporary to try and sort the eczema out!

Why can’t you buy the lower % cream?

Can I pop a bit of 1% on? Sad

I’ve had the same problem, I just ordered a repeat prescription from the GP.
I wouldn’t use 1% on my eyelids.

KatChocolate · 07/04/2021 19:04

@Lordamighty I wish I could get through to my GP! It’s so frustrating!

I don’t understand why you can buy the stronger % though? Hmm

You can't buy it for use on the face though.

KatChocolate · 07/04/2021 19:08

I know @wonderpants but when you go to your GP they do prescribe 0.5% for your face, as long as it’s not long term!

Because the company marketing the 0.5% h c cream hasn't applied for an authorisation to sell it without prescription. I presume that they don't think that they will sell enough to make it worth their while.

KatChocolate · 07/04/2021 19:10

@78percentLindt thanks, I never knew that! Which leaves me needing to try my GP again tomorrow! Easter Sad

I've been prescribed 1% for my eyelids. Don't know if it's allergy or eczema at the moment. Only allowed 7 days use.

Formulation123 · 07/04/2021 19:10

I would get some of the 1% and mix it with moisturiser. If you look at 1% per weight and use a 50/50 it should be sufficient

Tibtab · 07/04/2021 19:10

Mix the 1% cream 50:50 with plain emollient cream like E45 then you have 0.5%.
It’s like the PP said, it’s all to do with marketing authorisation.

KatChocolate · 07/04/2021 19:15

@GuyFawkesDay hope yours clears up soon! Is it just once a day you need to apply?

Thanks @Tibtab and @Formulation123 I might have to give this a go and just apply sparingly.
