What is this scam?

AIBU to think it's a scam or is it just an innocent coincidence?

I have got an unusual first name and just got a call from a mobile number not in my contacts. (Number appeared on my screen).

Man said 'Hi is that ?' I said yes and he said
'I think I must have the wrong ,
I'm phoning for Johnson, sorry about that!' (not my surname).

AIBU to think this is more than a coincidence?
My mobile, my odd name?
What is he up to?

It’s odd but I can’t figure out what sort of scam they are running if they didn’t ask for more information. It’s odd that they got your number in the first place and know your name.

UmbilicusProfundus · 07/04/2021 18:30

Maybe it was a one night stand from years ago and he still has your number as you were deffo gonna have that second ‘date’.

In any case it doesn’t sound like a very good scan if he didn’t get your credit card details or secure a large bank transfer.

SpringtimeSummertime · 07/04/2021 18:31

This is why it's confusing me!
If I had an ordinary name I would think it was just a coincidence!
Why would anyone want to check if was my phone?

& How did they know my name?

You're in someone's contacts (his gf, partner, whatever) and he has got hold of the contact list, and has suspicions about an affair for example, so was calling to check partner hadn't put a fake name on a lover's number to hide it. So when you said yes i am (unusual name) his question was answered and he moved on to the next contact.

Haha! I don't think mobile phones existed last time I had a one night stand! Grin

Is anyone else dying to know this unusual name 🤣

Grin Not massively unusual - Just not popular like your usual Sarah, Jane, Emma type name.

I never confirm who I am to an unknown caller, I answer 'who's calling?'
I like to know who I'm speaking to too.

Notworking123 · 08/04/2021 12:42

Someone who knows 2 people with the same unusual - but not that unusual - name. They didn't say who they were so how can you possibly know they don't have your number stored on their phone? Least mysterious mystery ever!

Why would a complete stranger have my number stored on his phone?

Along with my name?

That will be an ex or child from a 1 night stand if you are male.

Alternista · 08/04/2021 22:14

I reckon that’s someone trying to find out who their own partner is having an affair with, as has been said already.

No exes since mid 1990s. 😅

It would be a woman calling if that were the case surely? A woman trying to find out if I was her DH’s other woman ? I spoke to a man!

Maybe he’s literally ringing everyone in her contacts though, to check they are who she’s saved them as.

You know you’re really Demelza, but he might suspect she’s just saved you as that but really you’re actually Dave 😁

Ah... get you. Yes, could be!! Smile

That's probably going to take him weeks. I haven't removed any contacts from my phone for years, I couldn't even tell you how many there are on there.
