I’ve noticed this afternoon that our neighbours have put this delightful stuff up in the gardening their side. It looks awful. Especially only on the two fence panels when there is about 10 in total.

We don’t get on at all with them, at all. But today I dislike them a little more for doing this.
@CharlotteRose90 I’d never expect them to ask to paint the fence of anything even if it is ours. Same with attaching planters or lights.

I’m only annoyed because I feel like it’s gonna bang every windy night and it’s an eyesore with it being only on a few panels. I’m just gonna try and speak to them tomorrow and ask if they’d be prepared to put it all along and attach it properly
We painted our side and attached the bamboo for privacy. Luckily I have good neighbours and they don’t care what we do as long as the dog doesn’t get in their garden haha. I fully agree with you though if it’s wood panels they will bang like hell in the wind. If they want privacy they can ask to use bamboo or some other covering .

Update - we went out today and came back to two more

Go out at night with a jigsaw and level it off.

TheHateIsNotGood · 11/04/2021 18:08

Don't worry OP - mine have recreated Maguluf in their little bit of Terraced Yard - replete with flashing lights, hot tub and very shouty daughter's cocklodger boyfriend.

And that was by the end of March - it's quite hilarious really as they consider themselves the Good Neighbours.

Anyways, there might have been a contretemps recently as there's no more cocklodger and Dad shouting over the Hot Tub competitions; it just hums and revs like an hovercraft occasionally, which is far more bearable.

gillybean2 · 11/04/2021 18:09

Looks like they’re trying to make it the same height all along. If it’s not properly attached what would happen if you removed your panels to do some maintenance on them...?

DesperateDannyBoy · 11/04/2021 18:22

@gillybean2 they’ve just nailed them in to the fence panels and then cable tied them together

Danny - looks like you've got an OK Corral stand-off situation here - your neighbours have expressed themselves in a quite legal way.

The only way forward is to be very, very Nice - which will annoy them as their intention was to piss you off.

Competitive Sweet Peas is your best option - plant loads and let them grow, grow, grow.

If your NDNs ask about anything, be sure to thank them as it's been a life-long dream of yours to grow Sweet Peas. That'll really piss them off.

HikeForward · 11/04/2021 18:54

It’s just for privacy isn’t it?

Maybe they don’t like you seeing into their garden or they don’t want their dog to see your dog. Or they don’t like looking at dogs and dog poo when they’re in their garden?

You could put something nicer up on your side to match the height, so you don’t see their weird fence topper? Eg add extra solid panels or a trellis on your side, firmly secured so they can’t remove them?

Reinventinganna · 11/04/2021 18:58

It looks awful. I wonder if they are going to tidy them up?

Aprilshowersandhail · 11/04/2021 19:39

You need a short sharp solicitor's letter requesting they remove it from YOUR fence..

LST · 11/04/2021 19:44

Can you attach a nice trellis onto your side to hide them?

Aprilshowersandhail · 11/04/2021 19:45

Op does not have to titivate the fence she paid for and presumably likes!!

LST · 11/04/2021 19:46

No I know, but it would probably piss the neighbours off
Aprilshowersandhail · 11/04/2021 19:51

But they won't see it..

Happytohelp1 · 11/04/2021 19:57

They look absolutely hideous. The only advantage is you get know privacy from
Them too!

LST · 11/04/2021 19:58

@Aprilshowersandhail

But they won't see it..
They will when their shitty effort comes down the first good gust of wind they see
DenisetheMenace · 11/04/2021 20:00

That’s horrible.

Are they maybe just leaning planks against the fence in readiness?

Screwcorona · 11/04/2021 20:11

It's privacy. It's fine, or would you rather look at them?

My neighbours put two up where their seating area is and we get on really well. They just wanted an area that's private if they're not feeling chatty and our garden patio is higher than theirs

BigWolfLittleWolf · 11/04/2021 20:20

I’m glad you aren’t my neighbour tbh.

We used to have bamboo roll very similar to this up too.
Though ours was level Wink

I imagine from the neighbours side it probably looked grim but actually, on our side it looked really quite lovely.
And we also attached it with nails and cable ties.

If you are that bothered grow a nice climber up your fence or attach some trellis.

DesperateDannyBoy · 11/04/2021 21:11

@BigWolfLittleWolf I don’t really want to attach anything to it tbh. That’s the point. You sound as selfish as my neighbours but I’m glad your happy.

For those saying it’s for privacy it’s fine etc. If you’d of read any of my posts on this thread you’d understand that it’s not that I don’t want us/them to have privacy. The issue is that it’s my fence panels they’ve nailed into, without asking and they’ve done a shit job of it. It bangs against the fence as they haven’t secured it properly, it’s uneven and it isn’t bamboo, it’s just shit untreated wood sticks that will no doubt end up ruining the fence. If they’d of picked something less shit, fixed it correctly and done it the complete length of the garden, it would be fine.

Selfish for wanting privacy and an attractive garden..?
Really?

At the end of the day, it is their garden and if they want attach screening in their own garden they should be able to.

The issue is that it’s my fence panels they’ve nailed into, without asking and they’ve done a shit job of it
The nails are highly unlikely to damage the fence and if you don’t get on with them are you really surprised they didn’t ask you?!
Even if you got on, I imagine they still wouldn’t ask you because it’s such a minor thing.
It’s a bit of cheap privacy screening and a few nails.

It bangs against the fence as they haven’t secured it properly
Then perhaps you should just politely ask them to put a few more nails in to secure it better?
Though ours banged a little in the wind too, and ours was definitely attached securely.

it’s uneven
Well that’s true yes.

and it isn’t bamboo, it’s just shit untreated wood sticks
Yes I know the sort you mean, I see them for sale every year and B&M and Poundstretcher and the like.

that will no doubt end up ruining the fence
Hmm
Honestly?
A bit of featherlight stick screening and a few nails?
It isn’t going to damage your precious fence FFS

If they’d of picked something less shit, fixed it correctly and done it the complete length of the garden, it would be fine
It’s their garden!
They can put up whatever they darn well like.
It isnt going to damage your fence.
You need to be a bit more tolerant, live and let live and all that.

blowinahoolie · 11/04/2021 21:50

Grow Leylandii down your side😂

DesperateDannyBoy · 11/04/2021 21:55

@BigWolfLittleWolf I actually meant selfish because you said ‘ I imagine from the neighbours side it probably looked grim but actually, on our side it looked really quite lovely.’

But thanks for going in and being precious yourself, ffs etc.

As I said, I’m so, so glad I am not your poor neighbour.
You should like an utter nightmare!

Aprilshowersandhail · 11/04/2021 22:04

They want privacy? They need to install a proper fence on their own side... Seriously op. Speak to a solicitor.. If they start adding other shite to YOUR fence it isn't going to last long is it?
