inspired by a family member telling me she doesn't think i should listen to the music i do (mostly metal/rock) around my son! is there any genre/artist/song you wouldn't let your dc listen to?

Any with swearing

neroforte · 06/04/2021 13:04

@aroundtheworldin80moves how old are they? do you think this would change when they're a bit older?

No. No music is banned in my house.

malificent7 · 06/04/2021 13:05

I let dd listen to whayever she wants but i do highlight sexist , violent lyrics etc. I wouldn't be happy if she listened to Stan by eminem for example but i used to listen to it as a troubled young woman and am a non violent pacifist.

neroforte · 06/04/2021 13:05

@DioneTheDiabolist

No. No music is banned in my house.
this is my approach too.

Mainly the sweary stuff which I guess is rap/drill etc.
But I also don't like it, not my cup of tea.

malificent7 · 06/04/2021 13:06

I think when they get to a certain age banning music is a bit daft....play your metal with pride. ...i mean where do you draw the line? It's art.

MyGoMargot · 06/04/2021 13:06

Don’t ban music at home

Talk about the lyrics, meaning etc and choice of language

Troublewaters2021 · 06/04/2021 13:06

I think I am strict with this 🙈 my DD8 is restricted hugely on way music she can listen to. Mainly is allowed
Things like
Kids pop/ jojo / movie songs like high school musical / Disney songs

Fyredraca · 06/04/2021 13:06

Not banned as such but I don't play it

AlexaShutUp · 06/04/2021 13:07

None.

I don't care about swearing.

If there was racist/sexist/homophobic language in the music (very unlikely given my dd's views Grin), then I would have a conversation about it with my dd, and talk to her about why it wasn't appropriate. I wouldn't ban it though - I have no real means of enforcing such a ban tbh.

Fyredraca · 06/04/2021 13:07

I like old metal and have been known to enjoy Iron Maiden and stuff from that era

MyGoMargot · 06/04/2021 13:08

I’m more likely to ban Disney pop etc tbh!

RevolvingPivot · 06/04/2021 13:08

My kids love Cardi B. They know not to repeat the swear words when they sing along.

OverTheRainbow88 · 06/04/2021 13:08

Anything that normalises racist terms

DisgruntledPelican · 06/04/2021 13:09

I’d rather they weren’t singing along with swear words when primary school aged, and were aware of misogyny in some rap, hip-hop etc. But I can’t imagine banning anything, and given the availability of music outside the home it would be a ridiculous thing to try and police anyway.

neroforte · 06/04/2021 13:09

i should add that my ds is still a small baby, so doesn't even know what they're saying! i still plan to listen to it once he begins to understand the lyrics and secretly hope he becomes a mini metalhead like me and his dad Grin

KingdomScrolls · 06/04/2021 13:10

Surely depends on she, I wouldn't play my two year old drill/some rap for example because of the language but also the level of misogyny.. Teenagers it's different you can have those conversations.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 06/04/2021 13:11

having brought my children up on Rock/ metal I almost cried when DD announced her favourite group was One Dire-ction! I don't believe in banning music, but wish could have banned that!

ShutUpAlex · 06/04/2021 13:11

The only song that I don’t play around my daughter is WAP. I love the song, just not ready to have a conversation about what a wet ass pussy is yet with a 6 year old Grin

No other music is banned though. We’re massive metal heads.

TheWaif · 06/04/2021 13:11

I turned off a rap song that mentioned something about a girl being a virgin and then how they couldn't wait to get her on a mattress.

SecretCiderCellar · 06/04/2021 13:12

Anything that annoys me. Grin

TheWaif · 06/04/2021 13:12

In front of my then 7 year old.

Boom45 · 06/04/2021 13:12

I think if my very white kids were singing along to stuff filled with racial slurs I'd probably be having a word with them about the implications of that.

neroforte · 06/04/2021 13:13
