To serve hot food on cold plates?

I've been chuckling my way through this thread and the desire for hot plates thing keeps cropping up: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/1651633-Omg-such-anality-from-pil-Come-and-share-your-anal-behaviour-stories-lighthearted

My parents got a new kitchen and had a special plate warming drawer installed in their oven. For the two of them. They put it on every night to preheat the plates before they carry them two steps to the kitchen table. Before that, they used to turn the whole oven on to heat the plates! My mother thinks hot food on cold plates is "disgusting", which is one of the reasons they are no longer invited round for meals if we can help it. (Believe me, there were many other complaints, it wasn't just that.)

But the reason they need to warm the plates is because they piss about so much between dishing up and eating! They've got to clean half the kitchen, load the dishwasher, wipe the counters, lay the table, wash their hands... Whereas in our house it's out of the pan, onto the plate, sit down, start eating.

They also distribute microscopic portions of food across enormous plates. They could practically just eat off side plates but have the most enormous dinner plates John Lewis could sell them. We have smaller plates and bigger portions so the food keeps itself hot.

I cannot be the only person who thinks it's actually more disgusting to use good energy to heat up plates every single night when it's your own fault the food gets cold.

@HeronLanyon

But was that shrew still hot (or at least warm), I ask you ?
CLEARLY not as it will IMMEDIATELY have become STONE COLD on contact with the air and therefore TOTALLY INEDIBLE. Obviously why the DC just sucked on it and didn't eat it - it was too cold to be food! Grin

Good clever Bonny baby. (Small sharp mn nod of approval).

VanillaAndOrange · 08/04/2021 17:06

I don't really like eating off hot plates. DH likes it but doesn't make a big deal of the fact that when I'm cooking I don't heat them. If someone faffs enough for the food to cool down, let's face it, the plates would cool down too.

FrameyMcFrame · 08/04/2021 17:10

I only heat the plates when we have takeaway.

I just find that takeaway food cools down faster, so hot plates help!

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 08/04/2021 17:11

Ah, love a hot plate.

I put a bit of water on them and microwave for a minute.

I also do these to preheat mugs so my coffee stays hotter, longer.

Send your mum round to mine!!

Pieceofpurplesky · 08/04/2021 17:13

I've seen gravy sizzle when poured on to my mum's plates! She's not so bad now they have central heating.

My plates are in a cupboard next to the oven so never Icy cold

user1471538283 · 08/04/2021 17:20

My DGPs always warmed plates and it is nice. People are lucky I cook anything in our house let alone warm plates!

LAgeDeRaisin · 08/04/2021 19:06

@Febo24 that was my thread. The cat shat in my bedroom fire thread.

LAgeDeRaisin · 08/04/2021 19:08

@HeronLanyon it was difficult to ascertain if the shrew was warm before it was sooked, or because it was sooked.

MrsDThomas · 08/04/2021 19:18

Ive cracked too many plates doing this so I stopped. I carried a roast dinner through to the dining table once and it broke in half 😂

Liedownsnikey1965 · 24/08/2021 14:33

Rubyupbeat · 24/08/2021 15:13

I always heat my plates for hot food. I heat them in the microwave.

maddy68 · 24/08/2021 15:48

I always warm the plates

ConstanceGracy · 24/08/2021 15:50

Tbf, we try and tidy up as much of the mess before sitting down to eat as after a meal I really don’t want to fart about doing all that tidying up.
However we only warm plates if we are having a takeaway to keep the food abit warmer.

Wheresmrpenguin · 24/08/2021 15:53

I thought I recognised this. Zombie thread 😂

clx24x · 04/05/2023 21:00

You're crazy!! Why would anyone in their right mind eat hot food off a cold plate, would you eat a salad off a hot plate?! If you're going to use cold plates, just eat cold food! Hot food on cold plates goes cold, end of!

ClareBlue · 04/05/2023 21:21

Not sure I've been to a house in Ireland and been served hot food on a cold plate. But most rural houses are freezing and have a harth that you just put the plates on top of. It would be weird for us to eat hot food off a cold plate, but I suppose it's what you are used to.

Marymary77 · 04/05/2023 21:23

Crazycrazylady · 06/04/2021 12:50

I like my food really hot so I often heat plates . Think food stays warm for longer.

I'm the same - I think the food goes cold quickly otherwise and then I have to microwave it. Had no idea I was so old-fashioned 😁

OhwhyOY · 04/05/2023 21:42

YANBU, hate hot plates, I always burn myself on them and it keeps the food too hot for you to eat if you just dish the food up and sit down. Agree also on the wastefulness of it. That said certain family members of mine are ditherers like yours and even with hot plates food is often practically stone cold as they are so disorganised, so if they didn't do hot plates it would be a total disaster. That said my favourite misadventure of theirs was forgetting to put water in the vegetable steamer and burning the veg... culinary disasters all around :-D

girlfriend44 · 04/05/2023 22:00

Always heat the plate. It's not rocket science it's keeps the food hot.

BlueAndGreen89 · 04/05/2023 22:30

The obsession with hot food / hot plates is something I noticed with my grandparents generation and my in laws. My MIL, now deceased, had to have her food so hot it was inedible for about 20 minutes after serving, and she was always disappointed any time we went to a restaurant and the food “wasn’t hot enough”. It was always absolutely fine, just not hotter than the surface of the sun.
It used to drive me utterly insane.

FangsForTheMemory · 04/05/2023 22:42

I nearly always heat plates for hot food but I wouldn’t dream of putting the oven on to do this. You put 1cm of water in a pan, boil it and put the plates on top. The steam heats them. You swap them round until they’re all hot. It only takes a couple of minutes.

AlCalavicci · 04/05/2023 22:47

I wonder if the ZOMBIES that resurrected this ZOMBIE THREAD like their plates warmed

theGooHasGone · 04/05/2023 22:49

My dad makes a massive fuss about warming plates and kicks up a stink if anything is half a degree off PIPING HOT. I couldn't give a shit and serve delicious freshly cooked food on room temperature plates.
