AIBU?

Free Bike?

My neighbour came over yesterday - He had been sorting out their garage and said:

‘X (his DS) has got a new bike and we wondered if Y (my DS who is younger) would like his old one?’

Those EXACT words.

I said ‘That’s kind of you to think of him, Thank you, I’ll ask him!’

Nothing more was said.

DS said yes and I suggested he went over, collected it and said thank you himself.

DS went over and came back telling me that as the man handed the bike over he said ‘How does £50 sound?’
DS was shocked and said he didn’t have £50. The neighbour said: ‘Don’t worry, your Mum can drop it off later.’

Thankfully, DH was smart enough to leave the bike there even though they kept saying ‘no take it’. He said that I’d call over later.

I haven’t been over.

AIBU to think WTF? What is wrong with people? Am I going mad? When did ‘We wondered if Y would like his old one?’ become ‘We wondered if Y would like to buy his old one for £50’?

I now have to go over there at some point and tell him to (fuck off) that we have ‘changed our minds’.

WWYD?

Just go back and say actually you have decided against it.

He is a cheeky fuck though!! Yanbu

stressbandit · 05/04/2021 15:46

No chance!! he should of made this clear it wasn't free.
I can't stand when people do this, thankfully it's a rare occurrence but I'm sure they do it to make you embarrassed and pay up. Angry

MatildaTheCat · 05/04/2021 15:47

Yes he’s a CF. Just say you’ve
Heard from a ‘friend’ that they have one put aside for DS already so you don’t need it after all.

No need to be sorry or embarrassed.

SpringtimeSummertime · 05/04/2021 15:48

I’m more annoyed that he waited until DS went to collect it before mentioning £50.
‘Your Mum can drop it over’
Really? No.

Tell him that you won't be taking the bike after all. If he wanted money for it then he needed to say so at the time. As things stand, you have no spare cash so he's probably better off putting it on Facebook.

BlackberrySky · 05/04/2021 15:49

I would say "Sorry, I don't have £50 spare at the moment, I thought you wanted the bike taking off your hands, didn't realise you were selling it"!!

SpringtimeSummertime · 05/04/2021 15:49

I'm sure they do it to make you embarrassed and pay up.

I think this is what he’s done. I might not bother going over at all.

I think he thought if he backed you into a corner you would pay out of embarrassment , well done to your DS for not taking it .

If he asks you 'how does £50 sound ' say thats fine and hold your hand out and wait for the money !

Howshouldibehave · 05/04/2021 15:52

@BlackberrySky

I would say "Sorry, I don't have £50 spare at the moment, I thought you wanted the bike taking off your hands, didn't realise you were selling it"!!

This!

Twat can have the hassle of listing it on eBay or on a FB selling site if he wants money for it!
DirtyDancing · 05/04/2021 15:54

I would do absolutely nothing. You didn’t agree to pay £50 for anything. If they say anything at all I would just say, “you didn’t mention you were selling it to us. We don’t want it.” Then I walk away. No more explanation required. They can put it on eBay or whatever

AaronPurr · 05/04/2021 15:54

CF indeed! Shock

Well done to your DS for refusing to take the bike.

SpringtimeSummertime · 05/04/2021 15:55

I’m really pleased DS didn’t take the bike. He obviously knows not to spend my money!
When I told him about the bike, I said ‘It’s free! You might as well, it will do until your B’day’ (He needs a bigger bike and has been promised a new one!)

ViciousJackdaw · 05/04/2021 15:57

He needs a bigger bike and has been promised a new one!

When he gets it, I do hope he rides past the neighbour's house multiple times per day!

SunIsComing · 05/04/2021 15:57

What a cf! Tell him to get on his bike and bugger off.

steppemum · 05/04/2021 15:57

@BlackberrySky

I would say "Sorry, I don't have £50 spare at the moment, I thought you wanted the bike taking off your hands, didn't realise you were selling it"!!

this!

He can list it on gumtree and ebay etc.
he will get peanuts for it if it is a standard kids bike. No-one wnats to buy second hand bikes
SpringtimeSummertime · 05/04/2021 15:59

Ugh.
I’ve decided not to go over and ‘explain’.
If he wants to talk to me he knows where I am.

AlCalavicci · 05/04/2021 16:03

@SpringtimeSummertime
While I agree that you do not owe the CF a explanation it may be a idea to drop him a very brief text saying your DS no longer wants it or ( been the CF he is ) he may say he kept it for you and could of conned someone else in to having it if you had told him you didnt want it

BluntlySpoken · 05/04/2021 16:03

Or just say. We thought it was free and only accepted to tide him over until his birthday. But thinking about it 50 quid as a temp bike isn't worth it so ds has decided to wait until his birthday. Thanks anyway

TheVolturi · 05/04/2021 16:04

I'm wary of situations like this and I think I'd have said, that's great, how much do you want for it? Just to clarify if it was actually free.

Bettysnow · 05/04/2021 16:04

I wouldn't go near him and if he lands over to you just say "oh hi neighbour, son said you were actually selling the bike? I didn't realise as you never mentioned wanting money. I don't make big purchases outside of birthdays and xmas!"

PandaFluff · 05/04/2021 16:05

Well done to your son!

Cadent · 05/04/2021 16:05

@BlackberrySky

I would say "Sorry, I don't have £50 spare at the moment, I thought you wanted the bike taking off your hands, didn't realise you were selling it"!!

Don't say this, it lets the twat off the hook!

Ask him why is now asking money for it when he was giving it away earlier.
normalsaline · 05/04/2021 16:07

Agree with PP that he hoped you’d pay out of embarrassment Angry

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 05/04/2021 16:08

What a chancer!
Well done your ds for not taking the bike.
Good on you for not going over with an explanation - cheeky git.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 05/04/2021 16:12

I'm glad you're not going over! You're right, he knows where you are. He should realise he's been a twat and either bring it over for DS (free) or just stay the hell away.

The mans a cheeky fucking idiot.
