AIBU?

AIBU regarding betting?

My husband has had some issues in the past with taking gambling too far and losing control meaning we had lost some of our savings. We together decided that enough was enough and he deleted all accounts etc. Since then he has not placed any money on any sort of gambling application.

I have recently found out that he is placing free bets online, in multiple ways, whether that be free poker or free spins on a sports betting app. Both with potential to win money that he states he would likely therefore use for further gambling within that app. Although, as free gambling goes he has not yet won any money on these free bets.

He thinks he has enough control with this as he is not using any of our money. I feel that this is just continuing a bad habit, albeit without any actual ‘cost’ on us.

AIBU to think that this is just as unhealthy and that gambling should be a complete no for someone with his past? Or would you consider this free betting as a safe and ‘in control’ alternative?

I wouldn't tolerate that.

That could be because I have a family member who lost her home to a gambling XH.

It's a hideous and invidious habit.

He needs to abstain from all gambling activity if he is genuinely committed to ‘recovery’ from addiction (the same way if it were alcohol, or cocaine)

Can he try and access something like Gamblers Anonymous?

Nope. I have no problem with gambling for fun but some people just can't. If you know that about yourself then you shouldn't gamble
