Fish fingers look nothing like the photo on the box

My Birds Eye fish fingers seem to have a lot less fish in them than the ones pictured on the box and taste more like fishy crumbs than crumbed fish. Fish fingers have been a Saturday lunchtime staple in our house for years, but are sadly on their way out unless anyone can recommend a better brand. Sad

I can't remember if it was Lidl or Aldi's that were really thick. I moved from BE to Iceland.

Happycat1212 · 03/04/2021 12:58

Nothing looks like it does on the box

SappysCurry · 03/04/2021 12:58

The chilled (not frozen) chunky cod ones in Sainsbury’s are good with actual flakes of fish inside.

Plumbear2 · 03/04/2021 12:59

They often don't use real food on packaging or advertisement, it's made up to look more appealing to sell a product.

Zancah · 03/04/2021 13:00

Yabu to believe any product looks like what's on the box.
I once happened across a behind the scenes type video on marketing photography - did you know that the foam on coffee in the adverts is fairy liquid? Wink

Following for fish finger recommendations though, I agree that they aren't in the least bit pleasing.

PurpleTygrrr · 03/04/2021 13:04

I found the same so instead of getting big boxes of Birdseye ones and giving my daughter 2 of those, I get the chunky Tesco finest and she just has one. Much more fish and nicer batter.

MasterBeth · 03/04/2021 13:05

How bizarre.

I’ve never seen a product photo that looks more appealing than the actual product before. Thanks for pointing it out, OP.

Imagine if companies did this all the time!

JovialNickname · 03/04/2021 15:47

It's a shame, nothing is ever as good as it looks on the box!

On the plus side though, you seem to have found yourself some really big peas.

Yes! Such a relief to find some that taste right.
sunflowersandbuttercups · 03/04/2021 16:11

That's because what's on the box is probably fake.

ThatOtherPoster · 03/04/2021 16:23

I’d send those photos to Birds Eye customer care. You’ll get a voucher to spend on more fish fingers so next time you can just eat twice as many.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 03/04/2021 16:27

I knew a food stylist who arranged food for packaging, and her partner was a food photographer. They earned a lot.

NiceGerbil · 03/04/2021 17:15

I just had a big fishfinger sandwich because of this thread Grin

Oh, I've seen many, but none that have motivated me to post to Mumsnet before. Birds Eye have sunk to a new low! Grin

I remember watching a panel blind tasting different brands of fish fingers. I can't remember which one came on top but i do remember Birds Eye coming last.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 03/04/2021 20:47

Those Birds Eye omega fish fingers are grim. I had them as a sub on the online shopping.

I think they are pollock, but you have to look hard for the type of fish.

We like Sainsburys cod fish fingers. 30 for £5.

Again make sure they are cod not the cheaper omega ones.

MrsWooster · 03/04/2021 20:47

I wonder if BE ones have changed too; we’re a big fan of the FFSandwich in the Wooster household but DS has recently- (last few months?) started saying they taste, and I quote, of “aliens brains”. No, they are not on the meal plan.

ArtfulScreamer · 03/04/2021 20:48

I don't often eat fish fingers but when I do I like Sainsbury extra special haddock fish fingers from the freezer section, really chunky and tasty.

Iknowtheanswer · 03/04/2021 20:50

I once had a boyfriend who worked with a photographer. The food pictures are so fake - food is varnished, glued, held up with cocktail sticks...

HeronLanyon · 03/04/2021 20:52

A couple of years ago I was really outraged fuming about some product discrepancy - I complained to trading standards (or advertising standards), they pursued it, I got embarrassing sized refund plus compensatirynelement and packaging changed. Stupidly I can’t remember what it was - know it was to do with size of product and to do with photo and size of packaging both being wildly misleading. It was just one of those times I thought ‘im sick of this just being the crap we live with from mega food companies’.

quitecontrary123 · 03/04/2021 20:53

Aldi do some nice chunky ones in the fridge section

TroysMammy · 03/04/2021 20:55

That's a very small plate so the fish fingers will look huge. On a normal sized plate, as you have found, with chips and peas they don't look so big.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 03/04/2021 20:57

Sainsburys chilled section - taste the difference fish fingers. They are about twice the size of crappy birds eye ones, far more fish.

lookingforwardtothefutur · 03/04/2021 20:59

Bored ?

bonfireheart · 03/04/2021 21:00

We've stopped eating fish fingers but I keep buying cod/Haddock and using breadcrumbs to make my own but haven't done it so. Might actually try it next week.
