Lots of sites don’t let you so I can see why people get confused

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 29/03/2021 12:37

Abso-f*ing-lutely Grin

BIWI · 29/03/2021 12:38

Irritates the hell out of me. Or should I say, the h*ll?!

We all know what the asterisks are replacing. So if you type fk we know that you mean 'fuck' - so how is it any less of a swear?

If you don't want to swear, then don't. If you do, you can.

woofwoof1880 · 29/03/2021 12:38

I was once called a c* on here. I don’t think it’s fair to say that anyone is being prissy.

Strangekindofwoman · 29/03/2021 12:38

One read of MN shows you there is no swear filter on here.

I'm considering going NC with a friend who stars out swear words in her messages to me. We are women in our late 30's, if you're gonna call your DH a fuckhead I can handle it not being started Grin

I don't swear often and if I do it's the mild stuff (!!) but I actually value the fact that swearing is OK on this site, it's one of the reasons I use MN. I think people are allowed to be more themselves because of it, if that makes sense....

LAgeDeRaisin · 29/03/2021 12:42

Agree. Say fuck or sy smething *lse.

Meowchickameowmeow · 29/03/2021 12:46

You can get banned from MN for swearing.

So I don't blame people for being cautious.

My favourite is the poster who got banned for calling themselves a twat Grin.

Strangekindofwoman · 29/03/2021 13:01

You can't get banned from MN for swearing. Only if you are swearing in a PA at someone.

Oh you absolutely can get banned.

You just have to use the word chavvy too.

Strangekindofwoman · 29/03/2021 13:03

You can get banned for lots of things but not just for swearing.

OP posts:
whetherpigshavewings · 29/03/2021 13:06

It's all very good to make blunt statement, but experience proves that you are wrong.

Just have a look at deleted posts . It's not just about abusing someone. (I appreciate you can't look at them now, unless you go on reddit, but when you are in a thread and swearing is happening, keep an eye on them, they'll get deleted and it's likely posters won't be coming back).

PhilCornwall1 · 29/03/2021 13:13

I've been confused on some posts when people have said they are "ducking angry!!". I thought you what??

God bless autocorrect!!

Giantrooster · 29/03/2021 13:13

See I thought you were allowed to say cunt, but have recently seen posters saying it can get you banned.

Perhaps whetherpigshavewings is right and the chavvy combo does the trick?

Calling someone a rough cunt must be the ultimate insult then?

I'm a little disappointed, I'm foreign and I think your swear words on MN are quite repetitive. Looking forward to be taught better and more 'flowery' ones Grin.

(just had to edit my post, autocorrect had change cunt to count Hmm).

From Talk Guidelines:

Swearwords and offensive language
It's not our policy to delete swearwords (we're all adults, after all) but we do draw the line at obscenity, racist, ageist, disablist, homophobic or transphobic language, and wording that is truly awful

So I guess it depends on how truly awful your swearing is! Swearing at someone is obviously a personal attack, and will get your post banned. But how you define a post as obscene or truly awful is much more subjective and down to MNHQ to decide.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 29/03/2021 13:21

Interesting that the guidelines don't include sexist or misogynist language as being offensive.

BIWI · 29/03/2021 13:23

@AlfonsoTheTerrible they do:

We're all for freedom of speech. That said, we'll remove posts we consider to contain personal attacks, to break the law and/or to be obscene, racist, sexist, disablist, ageist, homophobic or transphobic, once they are brought to our attention. We will also delete any posts that we think are just seriously unpleasant (please note that any subsequent posts repeating the words in the deleted post may be deleted, too)

Misogyny not mentioned specifically though, although I assume MNHQ would say that 'sexist' and/or 'unpleasant' covers that.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 29/03/2021 15:41

Ah. Thanks!

In the original post sexist wasn't mentioned (obscenity, racist, ageist, disablist, homophobic or transphobic language) so I appreciate the clarification.
