How long would i need to do on a treadmill a day to walk 5 miles. Would it improve my fitness. How long would it take after having none

If you've not done any solid walking before, probably about 1.5-2hrs.

If you're on a treadmill because getting out and about is difficult but you want to be comfortable matching your pace and stamina outside when it becomes practical, set the incline on the treadmill to 3-5% so you're walking very slightly uphill, which mimics how much more difficult walking outside is than on a treadmill.

It depends on how fast you walk. If you're doing 3.5mph then about an hour and a half. Boring as hell though.

EdgeOfFortyNine · 28/03/2021 20:15

I had a treadmill a few years ago, I have to say it was incredibly boring!
I did the Couch-2-5k, and by the end could run 5k, from a position of being very unfit to begin with.

I’ve since discovered walking workouts on YouTube and much prefer them to the treadmill runs.

As we are in lockdown and its school holidays i thought a treadmill would be eaiser. Plus i cant really get on with you tube work outs they bore me. I sit down and dont want to get up. I will be watching a tv programme which is what i would be doing anyway

Treadmill exercise doesn't have to be boring. You could listen to music, set something up to watch at the same time or follow a work out treadmill programme. Many can be found on YouTube.

TheVolturi · 28/03/2021 21:10

I run every other day and mostly do it on the treadmill because I've got young kids. I watch netflix on the ipad while I do it, it flies!

You're all set then Grin Time will fly by.

Have you actually got a treadmill? They seem to take ages to arrive if you have only just ordered one.

Midlifelady · 28/03/2021 22:05

I like donethjng a bit more pacy than a TV program. Upbeat music and a filmed route would be good (like in spin class).

MeredithGreysScalpel · 28/03/2021 22:09

Depends on the speed you set the treadmill to.
It would take me around 1.30-1.40 to walk that distance outside, depending on terrain.

One thing to be aware of with treadmills, they use a lot of electricity!

Silverstreaks · 29/03/2021 08:28

You'll become fitter quick by mixing it up.
Inclines. Short bursts of speed. Brisk walking.
If you just plod along with your heart rate constant you won't get much benefit.

I am doing a minute at each incline and then back down again. When i feel confident i will do the same with the sleed
