Are ring doorbells worth the money?

Hello lovely mumsnetters! Our doorbell was lying on our doorstep this morning after the really windy weather during the night & dh says its full of rainwater & broken. We are thinking of getting a ring doorbell to replace it, & I wanted to ask those of you with experience of them if they're any good please?

Our camera alerts us too.
We were concerned at hearing of the jammers and of thieves just ripping the Ring thing out.

It depends how much you value security and privacy. Ring has been beset by many security issues in the past. Although the reported ones have been fixed, like any piece of software there are bound to be other flaws discovered in the future. For example, one security bug a few years ago allowed a hacker to speak to a Ring owner’s children via the app. This, or worse, will happen again, because all software is buggy.

Ring is now owned by Amazon and so you will be giving the company a lot of extra data about your movements and comings and goings in your house. There were reports a few years ago of Ring sharing this information with unrelated third parties, but they may have stopped this now.

Finally, the product may experience outages from time-to-time (eg. 3rd February this year). Not particularly useful for a doorbell. :)

I’m impressed with how quickly companies such as Amazon and Google have found ways to enter our households and monitor and record us.

Very annoying for colleagues who work with people who are constantly looking at their phones because the iwnd has set it off again ...

If you are happy to hardwire one, have a look at the Nest Hello.
