For Angrily Killing Weeds

We have developers putting up loads of properties on a previous school playing field one one side, and another developer putting up 12 more properties on the other side [previously site of a bungalow and a garden]. We still have our local wildlife enjoying our garden, but at 8am this morning the bedroom (and the rest of the house) was vibrating [one storey], due to a pile-driver operating 8ft from our house.

At first I chose to take out my irritation by standing by my living-room window, glaring outside angrily. Then I noticed someone having a break and smoking. If I had my window open his cigarette smoke would have been drifting into my living-room; but it wasn't because it's March, not May, and I usually have the central heating on 'til August. Otherwise I'd have been able to shout out, 'Oy, your smoke's coming through my window', but I don't like being cold; so the window stayed shut.

So now I felt I had to up my game. I actually left my house and thought at this point they'd notice me several feet away from them, say hello; and I could ask, 'What/why are you doing this stuff so close to my living room/bedrooms?' I knew they knew I was there, but they didn't acknowledge me at all. This was when it dawned on me I was no longer young, blonde, and Swedish.

So now I was wanting to call out, 'I'm on my property and you're not two metres away, so can you socially distance from me?' Unfortunately, they didn't come quite close enough for me to be able to do that.

The outcome was that I just aggressively sprayed weeds on my own path whilst ineffectually glaring at men who took no notice of me whatsoever because they didn't care, and were more concerned where their next pay cheque was coming from.

😂 I once chased a fighter jet that flew over my house whilst angrily shaking my fist, I don’t think they saw me.

itsnotmeitsu · 26/03/2021 22:09

@OppsUpsSide, with all the technology we have now they probably knew. Wait til they turn up on your doorstep Grin

If they flew away fast it just goes to prove they did, and you frightened them off.
Unreasonabubble · 26/03/2021 22:17

Have you been drinking? It's not at all a very good AIBU.

Alvinne · 26/03/2021 23:08

YABU to use weedkiller. Terrible for the environment.

Elasticizer · 26/03/2021 23:32

Why did you have the weed killer with you to go and ask them? Or was weed killing a coverup..but you angrily enjoyed the death of the weeds?

OppsUpsSide · 26/03/2021 23:33

I prefer the violent act of pulling weeds up personally

itsnotmeitsu · 27/03/2021 22:23

@Unreasonabubble, @Alvinne and others > This was supposed to be a [very] mildly amusing thread. Also @Unreasonabubble, I didn't realise I had to pass an exam to post on AIBU.

I've long had depression and anxiety issues. I used to live in a really peaceful area where all I heard was wildlife. Now I've living in the midst of a construction site. I'm horrified for my own fox/squirrel/pigeon/blackbird families because of what's going on around them, but no, dismiss me, because I'm "drunk", and it's "not at all a very good AIBU".

Are you Arthur Dent?

AlCalavicci · 27/03/2021 22:29

Next time ask @OppsUpsSide's jet plane to do a low pass ( warn all the wild life first ) and it will scorch your weed and light the work mans cig for him

Returnoftheowl · 27/03/2021 23:07

@restrainingorder

Are you Arthur Dent?
Surely she's be laying in front of the bulldozer?

Oh I do so hope the OP was in her dressing gown. The guys probably didn't hear her, too busy channeling their Genghis Khan heritage...
OppsUpsSide · 27/03/2021 23:19

Honestly OP, try a good op’ fist shake, worked for me!
Unfortunately the buggers did come back. ExP talked me down from calling the SAS base to have a go, apparently that was ‘unreasonable’ Hmm

restrainingorder · 28/03/2021 10:15

,” too busy channeling their Genghis Khan heritage...”

Yup

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 28/03/2021 10:48

You will have no noise and all roadworks will magically disappear on Thursday. Everyone rushing to complete jobs last minute before the end of the financial year and/or Easter. The date of this year's Easter was set in 1752, the financial year end has been the same since at least 1704, so it's not as if they had plenty of warning.

And OP you should know that all workmen (and women) can only work between 8am and 4pm, regardless of weather and hours of daylight, as it is part of an oath they take.

ChristmasFluff · 28/03/2021 11:02

I was hoping for validation that other people sometimes get as irrationally angry at plants as I do.

I once took a blow torch to some huge thistles because they pissed me off so much.

VeganVeal · 28/03/2021 14:10

Take some photos of the builders and put it on facebook in the hope someone else will do the dirty work and shame them for you

OppsUpsSide · 28/03/2021 18:11

I probably shouldn’t find this as funny as I do!
I don’t usually get angry at plants (and except bindweed, the fucker) but I do get into wars with inanimate objects. In my defence, they always start it.

itsnotmeitsu · 29/03/2021 22:04

@VeganVeal, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but I woudn't dream of taking photos of private individuals and posting them online. I have a Facebook account but never post.
@OppsUpSide > I agree with you about bindweed. And there is no way an argument between me and a plant will ever provide a satisfactory resolution.

I don’t understand what they’re supposedly doing wrong?

Throckmorton · 29/03/2021 22:30

Not the point I know, but if you like the local wildlife, please support them by stopping straying weeds. Pesticides are awful for the environment and wildlife.

CoalCraft · 29/03/2021 23:01

YANBU OP, when I go out armed with the weedkiller I say that I'm going on a herbicidal rampage Grin

LAgeDeRaisin · 30/03/2021 08:49

YANBU OP.

Get a rolled up newspaper, put some overnight curlers in and just 1 Nora Batty slipper. Leave the other on your front step. Hobble out at speed 9 and start screaming about the youth of today mid way down your garden path.

Good luck OP

itsnotmeitsu · 30/03/2021 19:52

@LAgeDeRaisin > Don't understand the Nora Batty reference, but really like your posting name :-)
Today I'd have loved to be sitting in my garden, barely dressed, reading the paper. But with the builders on one side practically being in my garden, looking down from above, I stayed indoors. This was more for their sake than mine.
