Interview: why would this happen?

I'm an agency worker and teach im various schools.
On Monday at 5pm I had a call from agency saying that, despite interviewing people all day who had applied for the job, the school rang the agency and wanted to fit me in for a last minute interview on Tuesday at half 3 for a teaching post on zoom. I would be hired directly by the school though.

I had never heard or worked in the school before but thought why not!
I prepared answers and I thought the zoom interview went well.

They rang me today to say I was unsuccessful.
The thing is, I never even applied for the job like the other people they would have interviewed on Monday, so why did they bother ringing the agency? I don't get it.

I thought I stood a good chance as the school purposely fit a last minute interview in for me?

I've literally no idea why this is confusing.

Original people applied - none suitable.

So they Contacted agency, they put forward either just you or loads of people. You weren't suitable.

I can only conclude that the OP doesn't understand how interviews and agencies work as ime this is a perfectly routine way they operate

I don't understand the confusion.

They interviewed people on Monday, none of whom were deemed suitable

Interviewed you (and maybe others from either same agency or different agency) on Tuesday. They also didn't offer it to you.

Therefore, either they offered it to someone else interviewed on Tuesday or are still looking.

Just because the Monday interviewees weren't suitable, whilst it puts you in a better position, definitely doesn't mean you're guaranteed the job.

Sorry you didn't get the job, but am unsure as to the confusion.

I agree that it's not confusing. They didn't like the ones short listed so asked the agency for alternatives.

The agency gave them some and they'll have appointed from there. If they didn't like the ones the agency sent, they will keep looking.

As someone who has hiring power, in future if you see a job you can apply for yourself do so. If I got to the point of having to choose between 2 equally good candidates and one requires me to pay a large finder's fee to an agency, that's going to influence my choice!
