In Tesco this morning doing a food shop - went down the electricals aisle and there were some great reductions (75% off ish) on headphones so picked up three pairs.

At the till two pairs went through at the price shown fine but one only showed up at the wrong price - said £15 instead of the £8 stated on the rack.

I told the assistant that they had come up at the wrong price and she was adamant they were £15 so I said I'm more than happy to show you where I got them from, and said if they aren't priced correctly then at least you can amend them. I know shops aren't obliged to sell to you even if priced wrong.

Anyway we go to the aisle where I got them and I showed her - the racks the headphones are on are security ones - you have to slowly twist the arms to get the headphones to release - obviously designed so not easy to steal. It also means it's impossible to put them back on so I couldn't have put the headphones on a different hanger.

This shop assistant was so grumpy with me - all but implying i was tricking them. Kept saying that they were already half price, that £15 was their actual price down from £30 but she'd have to put them through at £8 now. She made me feel really bad. I said to her when we were back at the checkout I genuinely thought that was their price as that was on rack and it's not my fault if they're priced wrong. She harumphed her way through my transaction , I asked if she could take off the security tags twice and she ignored me and I ended up holding up people trying to get her attention to remove the tags and she gave a massive sigh when she finally did it.

I'm not really a complainer but can't see what I did wrong or what merited her being so arsey with me. I shop in this store all the time so don't want to be singled out as a difficult customer!

Ah the old 'they were on the wrong shelf' trick. Who buys headphones in pairs of three? probably thought the assistant?

Wallabing · 23/03/2021 12:46

I wouldn't complain. This sounds way more harsh than it should, but it's a pretty insignificant event. Let it go if you can.

It's hardly a sackable offence. She might get a talking to and then hold it against you/remember you in future.

One for me, and one each for my kids - when things are reduced that much yes I'm going to buy them. It's obvious anyway as the barcode is on the shelf/rack - if it doesn't match up they're in the wrong place. As I said in my post I know the shop isn't obliged to sell them if priced incorrectly.

Oh no, a random shop assistant will remember the OP and take revenge, Taken style!

“I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”

That's what I came here for - perspective. I was very annoyed as felt like I was being treated badly but you're right she might get into trouble.

I’m just waiting for the inevitable “don’t you know retail workers have worked all the way through a GLOBAL pandemic” comments.

abeanbaked · 23/03/2021 12:50

I probably wouldn't complain, but because I hate formally complaining, I would probably moan about it to anybody who would listen though, how british of me. Why does she care so much anyway? It wasn't coming out of her own pocket. She sounds rude, enjoy your headphones.

Tesco has a misprice policy or did have

You should not have said anything , then gone to the service till and showed them you were overcharged and they refund the full price, although in the past they would refund twice the difference, either way you are better off

I was gonna ask if the double the difference had finished

@donotfeedthebears

What I meant, was that OP doesn't want to be seen as a difficult customer. Shop assistant may well remember her as a difficult customer.

However, your idea of assassins moonlighting at tesco and taking out what they perceive to be annoying customers sounds much more entertaining. Reckon it would make a great comedy series!

Aprilx · 23/03/2021 13:34

Total non event.

Donotfeedthebears · 23/03/2021 13:37

@Wallabing - should I sell the rights to my series to the BBC? Just need to thinking of a title for it!

Personally, I couldn’t care less if a retail assistant thinks I’m difficult but that’s just me. Wink I complained about a really rude assistant in M&S and I saw her again and she glared at me so I gave her a big smile. I never normally complain and I used to work as airline cabin crew so I’m nice to customer facing staff - but this woman was a bitch!

I've done plenty of customer service jobs in my post and no way would I have ever had this attitude with a customer
