DH and I adopted LO a couple of months ago and he will only fall asleep being rocked at the moment. He likes it when you sing to him as well but I find myself with a surprising lack of songs to sing!

At the moment we having the following (always in the same order) and they're getting a bit repetitive for me!

Frozen (Madonna)
Frere Jacques
French National Anthem
Israeli National Anthem
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Alphabet (sometimes in French, German and Spanish as well if he is struggling to drop off)
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (again)

Sometimes I throw in a bit of Unpretty (TLC), Emotions (Destiny's Child) or Blackbird (Norma John) if he still can't sleep.

Any suggestions for adding a bit of variety to these? A mixture of traditional lullabies and pop songs would be great!

I've only ever sang 1 song to each of my children.
Brhams lullaby in German to my eldest and you are my sunshine you my youngest.
I tried others but nothing else worked. My boys spent a lot of time very distressed as newborns and didn't leave the hospital for weeks but these songs worked like magic

Heard it through the grapevine and calon lan always did it for my little girl. You can find English translations of calon lan or just have a bash in Welsh. Its a lovely melody Grin

There’s a lovely singing group called Soul cool babies and they have an album which is super soothing. My non sleeping daughter would almost always drift off if I played it.

ScarfaceCwaw · 23/03/2021 10:33

The Skye Boat Song is a nice one and goes well with a gentle rocking motion.

Dream a Little Dream by the Mamas and the Papas is also a great one, although personally I can't sing it without getting a little choked.

ParadiseLaundry · 23/03/2021 10:37

I've always sung La Vie En Rose and Moon river to my DC and they love the songs now.

Bumblebee413 · 23/03/2021 10:37

Edelweiss is my favourite, but there's a song on Spotify- "Go to sleep little baby" and it was like a spell the first time she heard it- she froze, listened, then her eyelids started drooping! It's got lovely lyrics too- makes you feel like you're not alone! Congratulations on your little one! X

I used instrumental versions of songs on you tube on a Mclung music channel

Giggorata · 23/03/2021 10:43

DC and DGC liked:
Ride On by Christy Moore
Suzanne by Leonard Cohen.
Mr Tambourine Man by Bob Dylan
Woodstock by Joni Mitchell
Yesterday by the Beatles

Marmite27 · 23/03/2021 10:44

Eldest liked Mary had a little lamb, Mamas going to buy you a mocking bird and Sandman by Metallica.

Youngest likes Ave Maria, in Latin, with both of us under a blanket.

Close to you by the Carpenters.
You are my sunshine

Toddlerteaplease · 23/03/2021 10:46

Or try playing Spem in Alium by Thomas Tallis. It's what I play to babies at work who won't sleep. It always works.

wizzler · 23/03/2021 11:04

My dc were treated to the Sheffield united greasy chip butty song.

BlackRibboner · 23/03/2021 11:53

Oh Mary Don't You Weep. Often changed to Oh Baby and usually worked!

GingerGetThePopcorn · 23/03/2021 11:59

DC1 loved a bit of Doris Day - que sera sera and Bushel and a Peck from Guys and Dolls.

DC2 likes Baby Mine and that song from Moon and Me that goes "I love you more than a sunny day, more than the Milky Way, more...".

This is a lovely thread. And exactly the kind of thing I'd have rolled my eyes at in the BC (Before Children) years, because only idiots who want to make rods for their own backs sing and rock their babies to sleep, let alone having a repertoire for the purpose Grin
