Advixe please - Sore throat

Hi all

I'm looking for some advice on what to do next regarding my sore throat.

My throat has been hurting really bad for three days now, pain came on suddenly overnight. I've not had a temperature, I am coughing and have a slightly runny nose. I've looked at my throat in the mirror and can see lumps on my tonsils.

I have been doing everything to ease the pain but nothing is working. Maximum dose paracetamol and ibuprofen, throat numbing spray, lozenges, tea with honey gargling salt water and using a humidifier. Tonight I have also vomited.

Please can anyone provide advice on what to do next? Am I being reasonable to contact my GP tomorrow?

It sounds like you either have a throat infection or tonsillitis.. I would definitely be contacting drs first thing you need antibiotics.. sending a healing hug x

From what you've described it could be tonsillitis. I used to get it a lot before I had my tonsils removed. Give your GP a call, they can either see you or advise you.

Get a Covid test?

Star81 · 22/03/2021 00:00

Have you had a Covid test ? With a sore throat and cough that should be your first thing to book.

The GP will not see you with those symptoms until you’ve ruled out Covid.

Indiangirl0000 · 22/03/2021 00:03

Thanks for your responses so far. I have requested for a COVID test to be sent in the post as a precautionary measure.

I don't think I have COVID as the only time I've left the house in the past two weeks is to go for a walk with DH

Covid works in mysterious ways but Star81 is right. Your GP won't see you with those symptoms and no negative test result.

Do contact your GP

I used to get tonsillitis a lot. Chloraseptic, which you can buy, helps to numb it. If it's really bad, codeine. I always needed antibiotics though.

I wonder if the painkillers upset your stomach.

Wish you better asap.

lydia7986 · 22/03/2021 00:35

85-95% of sore throats in adults are viral, so antibiotics are unlikely to be of much help (and most GPs rarely give them out for sore throats for this reason).

Even if it isn’t COVID, you’ve clearly caught something, probably a virus, somewhere!

Can you gargle with soluble aspirin? (I’m not a doctor but used to get tonsillitis a lot and was advised to do this by the GP. Obviously only do this if you can take aspirin and check that it can be taken in conjunction with any other medications you’ve had)

Indiangirl0000 · 22/03/2021 01:09

@Throwaway999 thanks for the advice. What's the ratio of aspirin to water you use?

If you have white lumps on your tonsils it could be bacterial tonsillitis, for which you would need anti-bs. I would contact a GP in the morning anyway

AnnieKN · 22/03/2021 06:26

I had similar symptoms last week (am prone to tonsillitis so knew it was likely that).

GP asked me to come in to be seen in person (I hadn’t had a covid test).

Throwaway999 · 22/03/2021 07:49

I’m not sure, I usually just throw a couple in to an inch or so of water, gargle, then swallow.
