How do I turn the cuplights on?

Liddelingland · 20/03/2021 16:50

We moved into a new house recently, which has cuplights under the kitchen cupboards. There was a note to tell us where their 'mains' switch is (hidden away at ankle height at the back of a cupboard) but turning that on doesn't make the lights come on. I'm assuming there must be another more convenient switch on or near the lights themselves, but I can't see it. There is a transformer (pictured) but I can't see a switch on that. What am I missing?

Have you checked inside all the base unit cupboards? That's where ours is.

Yes, I've had a good search. The wires just disappear up the back of the cupboards and presumably then go to the mains switch. I can't see another switch in-between.

Can you press them inwards? As in, the whole light being the switch?

Good idea, but sadly doesn't work.

Do the bulbs need replacing?

ShinyMe · 20/03/2021 17:10

What about twisting?

Ilikewinter · 20/03/2021 17:11

Ours are connected to a switch that looks like a fuse switch.....if that makes sense ... looks like a plug socket but with no plug socket holes!.

FOJN · 20/03/2021 17:12

Mine is it on the wall with the other light switches? Or is it on a separate fuse and the switch has tripped?

Liddelingland · 20/03/2021 17:20

@ShinyMe

What about twisting?
No, I tried that. No luck.

@Wilkolampshade

Do the bulbs need replacing?
Maybe, but all of them? To get to the mains switch I literally have to go down on my knees and pull everything out of a cupboard, so there must be a more handy switch somewhere.

Are they light sensitive?

As in - leave the switch to on and the lights will come on when it gets dark enough in a bit?

Have you tried googling to see if you can find somewhere that sells them to ask.

I've never heard of a cuplight and google doesn't recognise the word for me but maybe you can find something

TheQueef · 20/03/2021 17:35

Is there an inline switch on the cable between trans and first light maybe?
Like an old lamp switch in the wire.

Laiste · 20/03/2021 17:40

I keep thinking about this now OP! damn you Grin

I wouldn't be surprised if all the bulbs were blown OR one of the cables has come dislodged (i can see bare plaster? Bit of work going on which might have pulled the wire?)

However neither of these things address the point that that is a very daft place to put a switch if it's the only one. Infuriating!

We do have some decorating work going on, but the problem pre-dates that. I may ask the decorators if they can help me figure it out on Monday, but I was hoping the hive mind might help in the meantime.

Ours come on with a normal, on the wall switch. Its a double... one for overheads and one for under-cupboard lights exactly like yours OP. We had the kitchen fitted 4 years ago and the electrician never mentioned a master switch, but I'm going to have a look now.

Iqqq · 20/03/2021 17:46

You have to clap near the sensor.

thenightsky · 20/03/2021 17:53

Right... I've had a look around mine. The little switch box in your OP (photo) for mine, sits above the cupboards near the ceiling. The wires lead up behind the wall cupboards and are gathered together at the top out of sight and attached to a box exactly like your pic. I'll try to attach a photo.

One pic shows cupboard and how close to the ceiling it is. Second pic shows wires going into that box/master switch thingy. I had to climb on a chair to be able to see it though.

This is the 'mains' switch I referred to at the back of the cupboard. It seems to be "on" as it is lit up.

Isn’t that a switch at the end of the wire nearest the light?

Thanks for the photos. So the series is lights, transformer, switch?

You don't have an odd looking remote control hanging around the kitchen do you? I've googled and some of them seem to be operated via WiFi...
