Hi, I was just wondering what people’s first period was like after giving birth? I give birth to my DD 6 weeks ago and never really got a break from any bleeding, it went very light but now iv been hit with what I’m presuming is my period and it’s so heavy! Sorry if tmi, I was just wondering if this is normal. TIA x

I had bleeding again very soon after the postnatal bleeding; it was a uterus infection. (I felt it was too soon to be the return of my periods, especially as I was breastfeeding.) Easily cleared up with antibiotics. I'd see the GP.

Periods properly returned almost a year later (was still breastfeeding).

CoffeeAndDryShampoo · 20/03/2021 12:01

My first two periods after DD was born were both heavier than normal. I used maternity pads instead of normal pads. I've just had my third one and it was a lot more regular!

SoupDragon · 20/03/2021 12:01

I started mine with only a few days break after I had DD and I was breastfeeding. So unfair!

zigaziga · 20/03/2021 12:03

Mine came 18 months + both times (breastfeeding). First birth I bled on and off for 7 weeks after birth, it would stop for a few days and then start again - v annoying.

LuaDipa · 20/03/2021 12:09

I would see the GP. I bf both of mine and there was a clear break between bleeding after birth and my first period which arrived at 3-4 months after arrival of dc on both occasions. I don’t know what ‘normal’ is in this situation but I don’t think it can hurt to get checked out.

RampantIvy · 20/03/2021 12:10

6 months afterwards as I was breastfeeding.

Givemeabreak88 · 20/03/2021 12:11

I breastfeed exclusively all 4 of my children yet my period still returned after 6 weeks every single time Angry

Mypathtriedtokillme · 20/03/2021 12:16

I breastfeed and only got mine back with both DD’s after they turned 2ish but when they came back it was like 2 years worth at once. Bloody awful

Member984815 · 20/03/2021 12:35

Same as you bleeding post partum stopped and period returned 6 weeks postpartum, felt like a bit worse than a period before pregnancy but that could be due to still healing . If you are worried about it call your health visitor for advice

NormanStangerson · 20/03/2021 12:52

Mine was at 12 weeks PP. I was starting to wonder where it was (not BFing) and then bam. When I was on holiday. Heaviest thing ever for a week and a half. But they got straight back into a clockwork routine which was surprising and though they’re still heavy, they’re not a patch on that first one.

Babymama1993 · 21/03/2021 22:41

Thank you so much for all replies, iv read them all, I’m hoping it’s just a heavy period, I haven’t had any other symptoms like a temperature but have had slight dizziness and skin is a bit tender to touch on the right side, did anyone else have this? will mention it at the doctors thank you again x

I was similar to you, went very light and then my period came, and wow that was a period. I usually have heavy periods but that was something else. It settled down after a couple of days though ☺️

Orchidflower1 · 21/03/2021 23:18

I would def call the gp tomorrow @Babymama1993 to check for no infection. I had a tiny bit of retained placenta and had similar symptoms.

HintOfVintagePink · 21/03/2021 23:20

Emergency c with DD2. My periods for the sixth months after were worse than labour pains for a few hours each time. Bleeding was much heavier and still is. I have gone from medium sanpro to super plus pant liners. The pain has gone now though.
The joys!

Teaplease29 · 21/03/2021 23:22

I BF and first came at about 8 months and was really light. Still really light months later.. still bf which is possibly why

It's worth getting checked out for a uterus infection. I had one and my GP said it's not uncommon after an emergency section. Antibiotics cleared mine up in a week.
HintOfVintagePink · 22/03/2021 15:55

It was nearly four years ago. Still worth getting checked if no pain but still heavy?

minniemoocher · 22/03/2021 15:58

Didnt get mine back until over a year, cue paranoia that I was pregnant!

LimpLettice · 22/03/2021 16:25

I got my period back 28 days on the dot this time. Similar the previous 2, and that's with a chunky baby / lot of ebf.I'm just unlucky. However the tender skin, definitely
Get properly checked and don't be fobbed off.

KaMai · 22/03/2021 19:24

I'm with the othet replies lovely, get checked for an infection, I had one and antibiotics sorted it quickly. I though bleeding was almost finished at 6 weeks as down to just a little on a wipe and not needing a pad but got heavier and heavier over 4/5 days. I was EBF at the time.
Period actually returned when little one was 11 months old

I can't see what harm it would do to get it checked out.
