Have had a snotty nose and a headache on and off for a week. Kid has also been snotty. We've not had temps, coughs or loss of smell etc. so we've been carrying on as normal.

This morning I woke up feeling rather worse - coughed a couple of times on first waking, head pounding, felt a bit achy, shivery/warm and had that "stuffy warm face" feeling you get with a cold... but still no "persistent" cough, temp was normal on thermometer and no loss of smell.

Anyway - I decided to err on the side of caution because DS is at nursery with 20 other kids, so I kept DS at home from nursery, booked us both Covid postal tests, and CANCELLED MY VACCINATION APPOINTMENT.

Since then, I havent coughed once. The shivery feeling stopped as soon as i was up and about. Head is still pounding but trying to WFH and take external meetings with a four year old hanging off your neck will do that.

Now Im thinking I totally overreacted. It's obviously just a cold. Now we have to isolate until our postal tests come and results are back. Im particularly fed up as this is the third time this year I've isolated us (previously for what are patently colds with coughs caused by postnasal drip and DS having a bad week with his asthma).

WIBU to have gone from 0 to COVID TEST in 3 minutes? Or did I do the right thing?

So fed up of it all, and particularly irked that I now cant rebook my vaccination as they're moving onto 2nd jabs locally and are pausing 1sts...

I know people who only had a sniffle or just felt tired and tested positive so I think you've done the right thing. Very, very annoying that you had to cancel your vaccination though x

I hear you.

It's the FEAR of being the person who bursts the nursery bubble that gets to me. Theyve been covid free the whole way through, and I have a terror (because DS is asthmatic so always coughs a bit anyway) of being That Person.

Bit daft, I know.

Its a shame but you just don't know until you have the test results. You were right to be cautious.

Usagi12 · 18/03/2021 14:57

It sucks but you totally did the right thing. I know it's a pain but well done you 💐

sagaLoren · 18/03/2021 14:58

You did the right thing. It's driving me mad the number of people I know who've said "I thought I just had a cold so I went to work and saw my family and sent my kids to school and went to the supermarket...but it turns out it was covid". Agh!

Usagi12 · 18/03/2021 14:58

Honestly, if more people had taken this illness as seriously we wouldn't be where we are now!

AnaisNun · 18/03/2021 15:19

It's so hard isnt it, when the official guidance says "dont test unless you have these symptoms", but you know deep down they could be wider.

I've had to email someone today that I saw for about 30 seconds on Tuesday so they could pass me a box of paperwork from their car, to say I couldnt return paperwork until next week as Im now self isolating "it's almost definitely a cold, please don't worry unduly, I'll let you know if anything changes" - and now i feel like dick about that too. Like - should I have told them the second i booked a test? Should I have told them nothing until I knew the test result and therefore not worried them about something that is almost certainly a non-issue?

I just feel like a dick in about 17 directions. I hate covid. It's creating "etiquette" issues I don't really know how to deal with.

I think you've done the right thing. My symptoms presented as a head cold....stuffy nose, sore throat, sinus headaches. No cough, fever. Lost my smell and taste on day 6.

yearinyearout · 18/03/2021 15:24

Well tbh I've done the same, better to be safe than sorry.

My vaccination appt was for today. On Monday I had a the runs and brief temp in the afternoon which disappeared after a couple of hours...did LFT Tuesday which was negative...felt fine yesterday then woke up feeling like I had a cold coming. Have cancelled jab and been for a PCR test. Be just bloody typical if I've got covid just as my vaccination was imminent! I can't really see where I'd have picked it up, but then if it's just a cold I've got it from somewhere 🤷🏼‍♀️

PivotPivotPivottt · 18/03/2021 15:25

I done exactly the same thing on Monday. My 3 year old woke up with a runny nose and cough so I messaged the nursery page at 8am and said she won't be in because she had a cough. So I booked a test for that morning, I assumed she would have to stay off for 10 days otherwise but I'm not sure if that's the case? Anyway she didn't cough once after I sent the message and I felt like an idiot taking her for the test but I just couldn't have risked sending her in to potentially pass on covid.

So our postal tests have arrived and we’re both... perfectly fine now after an early night😖

Of course we’ll do the tests and iso until the results are back but I am a bit annoyed at myself for being so paranoid- although I’ve managed to rebook vaccinations so that’s a relief Smile
