Ds 12 had a day of peeing blood just over a week ago followed by right sided pain in lower stomach and round to kidney.
Hospital discharged with suspected kidney stone and to wait for a scan.
Yesterday he's worse so gp gets us in again and they scan him no kidney stone, surgeons called to check for appendicitis but not that and they want to send us home. Paediatrician appears and says they've had scan rechecked and there's thickened bladder showing up that wasn't first visible and something about kidney flow possibly. Sent home to wait appointment with consultant and number to call if worse pain.
Ds still complaining tonight it hurts but just the same not worse. At what point is it acceptable to say enough is enough?
Every time he's in blood and urine clear which they say is encouraging but he's still in pain.
I made the mistake of googling ☹️

Anyone up? My brain is doing overtime tonight and sleep isn't happening.

Did they give you any idea of how long the wait to see the consultant is?

Some time in April.....

At the very least I'd be asking about pain control.

I don't think it's enough to say there's a follow up in 2-4 weeks, your 12 year old must be distressed, and consistently being in pain can be frightening. Also, pain will be there for a reason.

I can't help feeling this would be investigated more promptly in an adult.

Can you speak to the consultant's secretary and say child is still in pain, still peeing blood, after a week, and can she give a note to the doctor? At the least you should get a firm appt spot.

Presumably they've ruled out all infections?

(Speaking as an ex consultant's secretary).

Does his pain reduce with painkillers?

If not then I'd definitely be asking about pain relief.

I'm not a paediatrician, but I certainly do not think that you are being unreasonable in wanting answers. That does not sound normal for a child, particularly now that kidney stones have been ruled out. I think that it would be very fair to call back this morning and demand an appointment within the next week; your child is in pain and those symptoms suggest something out of the ordinary. Please keep us updated and I really hope your son feels better soon.

Thank you all, I'm glad other people would expect action sooner. Yes infection ruled out and I'm not sure of consultants name but going to make calls today. I know I can take him in to children's ward anytime but all they do is check he's clinically ok it's not getting answers what is actually wrong.
I work in school and my boss doesn't seem happy if I take time off which is making me feel guilty and ds has only been back since last Wednesday and now he's been off Tuesday Wednesday this week. His head of year was nice but then asked for hospital letters to help prove attendance. Feels like I'm having to battle everything.

I didn't get very far! Spoke to a very helpful nurse but doctor that phoned back said add ibruprofen in too then see if that helps for a few days. Apparently there's no rushing system unless bloods show infection or urine shows more blood or infection.
I might try appointments department tomorrow see if we are even in system yet.
