Nazanin has been let down again

It's appalling that they did not have somebody at the court case with her for moral support. Yet again they have let her down by not having a representative there.

If by "they" you mean the consulate, they can't be seen to be interfering in the iranian legal system. It's a v diplomatatically sensitive subject. That said British govt hasn't exactly covered itself in glory. Poor Nazanin, praying she doesn't get sent back to prison

I woke in the night thinking about her and her court appearance today. Can’t imagine what she’s going through. I pray they let her come home.

If the UK government sent a representative, however informally, it sets the stage for a political drama that the Iranians can use to humiliate the UK. The person who pays the biggest price for that, on Mother’s Day, would be Nazanin Zaghari-Radcliffe.

Should they have gotten her out of there before now? Probably. Did they make the correct play today? Certainly, even if it looks cold. Giving the Iranians leverage or signaling investment just elongates the crisis and this woman suffers more as a result.

YANBU. Every day I hope that the next I hear of her will be that she has landed back in the UK.

peak2021 · 14/03/2021 14:25

Remember who is really responsible for this- Boris Johnson. The Iranians would not be behaving like this if he had actually bothered with detail when Foreign Secretary.

The US hostages kept in captivity in 1979 and 1980 were let free once the President changed, history may be repeating itself in a way.

Her husband was disappointed that they, the embassy, didn't have anybody there and he knows what he is talking about, it's awful.

Boris has a lot to answer for. It was his original comments which did not help her case 😣

sergeilavrov · 14/03/2021 14:47

Her husband also understands that Iran doesn't recognise dual nationality; and thus do not have to allow UK representatives into that courtroom. I understand this is an extremely sensitive case, and that her husband will be scared, overwhelmed, disappointed - and above all, frustrated. His feelings are valid, but they don't mean that the UK government have done something wrong today. Any response only provides the Iranian regime an audience, and a platform on which to escalate and harm this woman for the embarrassment and division it will cause in the UK.

She is being subject to the most appalling treatment. She has already had to wait a week for the court appearance, and now they are making her wait another week for a verdict. Cruel, vindictive and unnecessary. Hoping for the only positive outcome, which is her immediate release back to her family. Even if she is released, it will take years of treatment for her to come to terms with all she has suffered. I feel so sorry for the whole family. Gabrielle is missing yet another Mother's day.

It’s awful what torture she is being put through
