To think that the world has gone mad - starting right here on MN

I think it might be nice just to press pause.

Everybody has an opinion, a giant soap box and they are not afraid to use it.

Women being murdered & abused
Curfews on men
8 year olds being called rapists
Closed borders
Lockdowns
World leaders picked by pinning a tail on a donkey
He/she/they/them
Vaccination
Conspiracy theories

The endless barrage of opinion is exhausting. I care deeply about many of these issues but it seems people are no longer listening - just shouting louder and louder to be heard. It really is starting to feel a bit mad.

Aibu to wish we could just press mute and reset.

Stay off social media. It's quieter out there.

JaneJeffer · 14/03/2021 02:40

Can we just go back to the 90's? It was nice there.

grassisjeweled · 14/03/2021 02:55

Yeah it's all a bit mad

GADDay · 14/03/2021 02:55

Yes. I so agree

@Firstbellini

Stay off social media?
I don't have a FB or Twitter account and use Insta sparingly. The big culprits are the news sites, Mumsnet and to a lesser extent LinkedIn.

Agree that my solution is to remove myself. Ignorant bliss and all of that - even if it isn't in my nature.

Imo it all stems from twitter, even if you don't have it, you will be subjected to it on other websites. It's pointless to even post anything against that goes against the prevailing view you will be downvote to hell. Reddit is terrible, every sub seems to be mental, crazy left/right rhetoric, it's all just dull as fuck. I'm sure the stuff I used to read on the Internet was so much better.

Wilsonwilson · 14/03/2021 03:36

Left/right has ceased to have any meaning. Each side is just an insult for those you disagree with dependant on identification. You can get off social media and ignore it all, probably for the best. The people in charge will keep getting madder though, until you can't ignore it any more.

Agree. Burying my head in the sand to drown out the noise won't be a long term solution.

I wanted to bring back my 90’s perm hair few years ago but do you think I could find a hairdresser that still did them. No

Yes it’s mad I’m angry about everything atm.

Wilsonwilson · 14/03/2021 03:55

I think the perm is best left in the past, sorry deirdre

NiceGerbil · 14/03/2021 03:55

Well it didn't start on here!

I mean if you really want to get excited there's the Russian interference in elections etc!

MN has a large amount of posters so it's probably a reasonable view of how people are feeling. If you ignore the really extreme stuff.

Out of your list I'd be interested to know more about what you have seen that's bonkers around women being murdered & abused, and vaccination.

woollysheeps · 14/03/2021 04:16

The affects of social media and lockdowns.

Monty27 · 14/03/2021 04:18

I feel it's a voice being thrown into a deep cavern so don't comment much on Facebook and rarely on twitter.
Some people like to think their voice is special.
There's so much sensationalism like the shit newspapers being quoted even.
CBA 😅

I have Twitter and don't see anything unpleasant, fb is fine, Instagram is fine. It's only on MN that I see the real hatred, it's an outlet for peoples stress.
rawlikesushi · 14/03/2021 04:26

I don't mind people voicing their opinions, it's the absolute blind outrage directed at anyone who doesn't agree with them that feels quite new to me.

In rl most people can agree to disagree, but the relative anonymity afforded by sm seems to make people rabid about whatever their soapbox issue is, and mn is no exception any more sadly.

RickiTarr · 14/03/2021 04:52

@JaneJeffer

Can we just go back to the 90's? It was nice there.
It did feel nice at the time in lots of ways and I feel homesick for it.

It was “my” decade, but I suspect if we suddenly got back there some of the norms then would instantly feel unbearable, bigoted, oppressive.

We just need to make ourselves cosy corners in our homes where we can centre ourselves @GADDay take breaks from the internet when we need them (and play our 90s music. I might even try to revive the velvet trend Smile)

JaneJeffer · 14/03/2021 13:00

I'm not on Twitter but it infects everything like the disease that it is.
