Should I pay the mortgage for security reasons?

I'm happily married, planning to be together forever, no plans to split whatsoever. But I'm not naive and do come from divorced parents.

We share finances completely, but we don't have a joint bank account, we just decide what needs to go out of where based on who will have the money in their account. The mortgage goes out of my husband's account.

But I keep seeing things on here where people say they're in a worse position at the divorce because their husband has always paid the mortgage. Does it really matter whose account it goes out of? I paid the deposit (which was actually inheritance money from my side).

I've never read a thread where someone who is married has been told it matters who pays the mortgage. Are you sure you've read that?

I don't believe it matters, but would be happy to be proved wrong. (Since I singlehandedly paid off our entire mortgage before DW made any contributions at all to joint finances.)

People who are unmarried need to be on the mortgage and deeds for security reasons. It doesn't matter which account payments come out of.

Did you get your deposit protected when you bought the house?

No, and never wanted to. Just 50/50 split in the event of it ending.

Maybe I've misunderstood and the threads where people are worrying that 'he pays the mortgage' are when they're not married.

I think the only point it’s a concern is if it wasn’t immediately apparent what you had been covering - whether that’s other bills or being a stay at home mum so covering childcare.in those two cases it’s clear that whichever spouse covered those things enabled the other to cover the mortgage payment.
