Hello one of my students is doing a health promotion on pregnancy and smoking
And would like to hear from mums who smoked or were exposed to smoking during pregnancy, (recent pregnancies and older ones) appreciate this is a sensitive topic and very grateful for your answers. Can we ask you why you smoked, if you stopped , what stopped you ? What could/ did help you stop or what made you carry on ?
What can a health care professional do to support you more? did they do anything to annoy you ... what would you pay more attention to tv advert , nurse, peer?
Any other feedback much appreciated
Polite request: No judgemental or unkind posts please

I was a smoker and quit the day I got a positive test result. I didn't use patches or anything, just cold turkey. The only thing that motivated me to stop was my baby.

Thank you
Were you exposed to smoking via friends and partner ?

Are there any mums out there mums who continued to smoke knowing they were pregnant ? unlikely on mums net where eating baked beans causes horror but thought I'd give it a go

No, nome of my friends or partner smoke and I'd stay away from people who were (in the street for example). Haha yes, you may have some trouble getting the info you want but you won't know unless you try.

My mum smoked with me but not my brother. But only because the morning sickness was so bad with my brother that she couldn’t!

I was a smoker. When I was first pregnant I stopped as couldn’t stand the taste of it. At about 5/6 months I suddenly really wanted a cigarette. My mum smoked so I used to have a couple of hers a day.... I was really craving them! I spoke to doctor about it and he told me a couple a day was fine. This was 18 years ago. I also lived above and worked in my parents pub so was always around smoke. The same thing in my second pregnancy 3 years later. I smoked inbetween pregnancies and then gave up for good when 2nd daughter was one.

If you created a survey and posted the link, you’d get way more replies. Nobody’s going to post on here that they smoked when they were pregnant, even if they lit up early morning before they got out of bed.

I smoked during all three pregnancies, but not much: possibly as many as five roll-ups on a stressful day. I also drank a moderate amount: less than two units a week.

None of my children seems to have suffered because of this, either physically or mentally (physically fit one completed the Marathon des Sables a few years back and each with 3 As at A-level, I think some A*s as well, can't remember).

I might make the effort to stop both these days in order to keep the health mafia off my back, but back in those days such people were not so alloverish.
