DS has been informed by his school he will have a 1.5 hour assessment before Easter for each of his A level subjects.
He has been told the topics that will be covered in this assessment.
It will be in the classroom under exam conditions.
The results will form part of the teacher lead final result.
In May they will sit an 'exam' in the main hall with all other students studying same subject, under exam conditions. The questions will be provided by the exam boards and the college will choose questions on subjects that the students have studied.
The results will also form part of the teacher lead final result.

Having been told that exams were cancelled for this year and the results would be based on course work, previous tests/mock results, essays etc AIBU to be confused on his behalf?

It didn’t say anything about previous I don’t think - just that it would be on school based assessments and that the exam boards would help out by providing questions schools could use if they wanted to. I’m not entirely sure, as I’m in Wales where it’s a bit different anyway.
I’d say the whole system has its flaws, but this isn’t different from what was said - and remember exams have flaws too. www.hepi.ac.uk/2019/01/15/1-school-exam-grade-in-4-is-wrong-does-this-matter/

It's only the externally marked exam seasons that have been cancelled. Schools are forming the teacher assessments from what they have studied so far. Pupils need to demonstrate what they've learned. Could you think of a better way to test that other than asking them to demonstrate what they know?

Yes YABU - if he isn’t confused, don’t worry. Just encourage. School are ensuring that they have a full assessment picture to ensure accurate grades are awarded.

YABU. What they cancelled was nationwide publuc examinations where every pupil in ghe country sits their Geography paper on the same day, and that paper is then externally marked. To assume that this means the school won't run any sort of tests in order to help decide grades was a bit daft on the part of your ds.
