to go squirt my neighbour's gate?

It's definitely theirs in terms of property boundaries but I also have access rights as it's the route from my back yard to the street. They've let it get in increasingly poor shape and it's been harder and harder to open and is now so stiff the double gate only opens on one side and that takes some force.

I can still get through walking, but I can't get my bins through (it's not an issue for them as they keep them on the other side but there isn't room for me to start doing that too even i could get them out).

It is overstepping to just go over give the latch and hinges a spray with w-40, rather than mess around trying to catch them (shift workers) to ask them if they'll please do something about it?

Just do it.

RhiWrites · 24/02/2021 14:10

Hmm. I’d drop a note round first to ask. It’s presumptive just to do it.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 24/02/2021 14:12

I would just do it.

Ismellphantoms · 24/02/2021 14:13

You have a right of way which they can't obstruct. Of course you can give it a spray.

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/02/2021 14:16

Can you come and do mine, it squeaks too much lol

SirGawain · 24/02/2021 14:42

To go squirt my neighbour's gate?
Shouldn't this be moved to the Sex Thread?

MyLittleOrangutan · 24/02/2021 14:45

I thought yu were going to say it squeaks and I still would babe said YANBU not like you're repainting it, they'll probably be glad you did it.

GirlInterruptedAgain · 24/02/2021 14:54

Go for it. A bit of wd40 could be just the thing.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 24/02/2021 14:54

I'll b honest, I was a bit worried by the title of your thread for a moment there Wink

nosyupnorth · 24/02/2021 15:12

did i deliberately word my title like that? mayhaps Grin

Hmmm general view seems to be it's fine so I think i'm gonna go for it

I just didn't want to be that overbearing neighbour, especially if it would sabotage my restraint over the summer in not slipping over with a watering can rather than watch as they let all of previous occupants flowers die of neglect

WD40 isnt the best thing to use, you really need a lubricant. WD40 is really to repel water WD= Water Displacement. A light lubrication oil would be better.

Biffsboys · 24/02/2021 15:36

Oil rather than WD40

willowmelangell · 24/02/2021 15:48

Ooh give it a good oiling!Grin

DinosaurDiana · 24/02/2021 15:50

Use a silicone spray instead.

Sh05 · 24/02/2021 16:01

Go for it, they'll probably appreciate the fact that you did it.
After the last few weeks of really windy weather I really want to pop into nextdoors yard and fix the latch on their back gate. The gate bangs all night and I can't seem to catch them, they're always in and out.

Summersun2020 · 24/02/2021 16:06

@RhiWrites why, in case they like having a gate that won’t open?Confused

OP go for it. You’re overthinking a bit Grin

RB68 · 24/02/2021 16:16

yeah I was going to say light machine oil might be best

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2021 16:17

Definitely do it. I would.

FlamedToACrisp · 24/02/2021 16:18

Just do it. if they have a go at you (and why would they?) just deny it and say you thought they did it.

thenewduchessofhastings · 24/02/2021 16:21

Lube it up then pop a friendly note saying you've oiled it as it was very squeaky and didn't want to disturb them as you know their doing shifts.

MummytoCSJH · 24/02/2021 16:23

If anything they will just be pleasantly surprised the squeaking has stopped, if it's something they have even noticed. Can't see how anyone could be upset about this Confused

MummytoCSJH · 24/02/2021 16:23

Sorry, squeaking/stiffness

spottedbadger · 24/02/2021 16:25

Go for it. We have a similar arrangement with the neighbours; although the fence and the gate are ours, we would never have a reason to use it and wouldn’t know if the hinges needed attention. I would be more offended if they asked us to sort it out tbh..

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 24/02/2021 16:27

Yep, not wd40. 7 think the stuff you need is White Lithium spray confusingly made by Wd40
Topseyt · 24/02/2021 16:30

I would just do it and not bother mentioning it. Chances are that they won't notice even.
