Talking to one person on a group chat

I just dont get it! It infuriates me to see a long chat between 2 people on a group chat full of people.
Why not message privately? It drives me potty. Aibu??

Depends.

Sometimes someone puts a bit of news or a question into the Group, one person replies and no-one else does, the original questioner comes back with another question about it, and the first 'responder' comes back with some more help, and it 'reads' as a long chat because one person in the group has the particular experience the first person is looking for.
Anyone else is welcome to dip in if they want to. I can't see why that would be annoying.

How strange - this was on 'unanswered', with no replies (obviously) and yet there are 7 votes. Hmm

Yeah surely it depends. I mean, if I post something and only Susan replies and we have a chat about it then great. If I open the group chat and specifically address Susan and Susan only, that's weird.

If the other people don't get involved in the chat then thats on them in my opinion. Unless someone messages something directly at one person like 'Feelinglow did you see the news?' Which would be a little odd and isolating to the other members of the chat.

If it is still a general topic of conversation, it's fine.

But if it is something that is only to do with the two of them, they should take it to their own private message thread, and stop making everyone else scroll through hundreds of irrelevant messages next time they log on.
