To not understand where this came from?

Just a little confused really. Had a message from the person who delivers our dog food saying she’s going to be delivering out and about round our way soon and did we need anything. I replied that we’re ok for food (we stocked up last weekend), but that it’s our (mine and the dog’s) birthday next week so did she have anything we could push the boat out to give the dog as a treat while we have a fancy meal ourselves for my birthday. The response came that yes we have X,Y and Z and finished with ‘am I reading this right that you want something for free??!!’ with a laughing face and lots of punctuation. I’ve pretty much written word for word here what I wrote but can’t fathom how she got the impression I was basically being a CF and asking for something for free! I’ve never had anything for free or asked or hinted or anything and have made a point of paying immediately after the food was delivered (pay online). Just can’t understand her thinking. I’m not bothered really, (despite posting on here!) and made it clear in my response that no I wasn’t at all. Just can’t work out the thinking! 🤔

Just reply that, no, you certainly aren't being a CF and that, yes, of course you will pay promptly for anything ordered. She may have jumped to this conclusion because she has other clients who have expected freebies.

RoseWineandCake · 19/02/2021 18:22

Probably because you mentioned your birthdays she thinks you are expecting her to get you a treat as a gift.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 19/02/2021 18:24

Absolutely did not get that impression. I'd reply 'no, why would you think that???'

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/02/2021 18:28

The moment customers mention birthdays everyone assumes they want free stuff. Such is life

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/02/2021 18:28

Tbh they usually want free stuff...

NasebohrenIstSchoen · 19/02/2021 18:29

Ok so the thinking is it was the birthday thing? How odd! I was only mentioning the birthday to explain I wanted something different from his usual food.

Her customer service skills need a brush up...

SendMeHome · 19/02/2021 18:30

I read it like you were going to ask for something for free, to be honest - there’s a lot of CFs!

Bunnybigears · 19/02/2021 18:31

Probably because that's how it came across to her, yes she may have misinterpreted but hey ho she is human. I would just write back "no not at all was just wondering if you stocked anything special I could buy Ddog as a treat for his birthday" No need for it to become a drama.

partyatthepalace · 19/02/2021 18:32

OP it’s not you it’s her - I’m sure some people do try it on for birthdays, but the easy way for her to deal with that is to say yes I have ABC at prices 123. Don’t worry c it, and if it annoys you, go elsewhere

NasebohrenIstSchoen · 19/02/2021 18:32

Just to be clear it absolutely never crossed my mind! Not for one second! How strange you can’t just have a conversation nowadays without people expecting the worst. She could have said yes we have X, Y and Z at £X each or something instead of being so (completely mistakenly) accusatory. Ah well, as my grandad used to say, there’s nowt so queer as folk!

IAcceptCookies · 19/02/2021 18:33

Perhaps it was your use of the word ‘treat’? If you treat someone, you pay for something for them (usually!). She thought. you wanted her to ‘treat’ you to some free dog stuff!

NasebohrenIstSchoen · 19/02/2021 18:34

Oh it hasn’t become a drama at all. I said in my OP I’ve already replied and all is well. Just couldn’t understand what made her think that.

HTH1 · 19/02/2021 18:34

Suggesting I am a CF would put me off dog food woman, so I probably wouldn’t order again (but would put her straight on the freebie point first).

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/02/2021 18:34

Yup. It's the birthday. Honestly, people try this everywhere.
"Oooh this cupcake looks lovely. And oooh. It's my birthday!"
"Lovely. That will be £x"
Face drops and often you hear "Nah, I will be good and not have it"
People try with everything. Can't blame her for assuming and absolutely wouldn't think bad of her.

NasebohrenIstSchoen · 19/02/2021 18:34

Maybe yes. I was trying to explain I wanted something different for him as a birthday treat, but I suppose that might be it.

OP posts:
NewPapaGuinea · 19/02/2021 18:35

Possibly from experience they’ve had people trying to score freebies because of “birthday” so reacting accordingly.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/02/2021 18:36

Tbf that adds to it.

I think she had so many she learned to juat jokingly say about free stuff because if you ask direct, it makes people back off😂 stingy and cowards😂
Not you. Just in general

TheCanyon · 19/02/2021 18:40

Your birthday was totally irrelevant though wasn't it? Like you want a birthday treat for the dog.

NasebohrenIstSchoen · 19/02/2021 18:42

Yes I suppose so my birthday was irrelevant. I was just being chatty really saying it’s both our birthdays so we’ll be having something nice so we feel dog should too! Just to clarify she’s a friend’s sister so we do chat like that too.

Would your dog be upset about this also.

NasebohrenIstSchoen · 19/02/2021 18:50

@1forAll74

Haha no I don’t think so! Neither am I, as I said. Was just confused really, as I said. People have explained though how it could have been misconstrued and I accept that.

Sounds like she barking up the wrong tree.
